All GORGEOUS planes. Once I have some room, I want to build some models of modern jets. Sukhoi is way up on the list, as is the F16 and F14.

Those explosion looking things are flares, usually launched from the aircraft to divert an incoming heatseeking missile. In the first couple of photos they've obviously changed the colour of the smoke, which is usually plain white, in order to enhance the display.

Yeah, some of the aircraft in the photos have numbers missing from their designation. For example, the Tu-14, should be Tu-142, and the Mi-2 should be Mi-28N etc.

No color is standard. Smoke is colored by the sun. I suppose such intensive smoke is to divert also laser/video guided missiles. But i'm not well rounded in these questions.

Just wondering, does Russia have any aircraft carriers?
If so could someone post pics please?

They used to have 4 smaller carriers (Kiev Class) with Yak-28s?? the Russian version of the harrier, though less sophisticated, along with two helicopter carriers (Moskva class) and one conventional carrier.

Now they've only got one, its the Admiral Kuznetsov, something like 58,000 tons?, carries Su-33, naval version of the Su-27, I've seen pictures of the MiG-29K and Su-25K onboard as well, but I don't know if they're carried operationally now.

Most of the others were scrapped, though I think they've sold one to the Indians.

There were some aircraft carriyng ships (Yaks with vertical take off and some helos) - decomissioned already and one carrier with Su-33 wings onboard.

Another carrier is to be sold to India with Mig-29 wings on it

"They used to have 4 smaller carriers (Kiev Class) with Yak-28s?? the Russian version of the harrier, though less sophisticated, along with two helicopter carriers (Moskva class) and one conventional carrier. "

The Yak-38 and Yak-38M were very limited aircraft, though the Yak-141 was quite impressive. It was supersonic for a start (mach 1.7) and was fitted with many systems from the Mig-29. It never entered into production however due to lack of money.

Three of the Kievs have been sold as scrap (one turned into a museum I think and the replacement for their current conventional carrier has become a casino in China as it was never finished).

The fourth Kiev class is being offered to India with Mig-29K2s, they have yet to sign the deal, though signing is likely next month or early next year.

"What...no pics of ejection seats?"

The Yak-38 was a great test for ejection seats, though fewer Forger pilots were killed compared to the number killed by Harriers during the first few years of life. Later on of course the numbers still favoured the Forger but that is to be expected as the Forgers were withdrawn, while the Harriers went to the US and several wars. The forger only went to one war where they were tested as a strike/support aircraft... they were a failure and were withdrawn from afghanistan fairly quickly.

"No color is standard. Smoke is colored by the sun. I suppose such intensive smoke is to divert also laser/video guided missiles. But i'm not well rounded in these questions."

Current Short range IR guided missiles have imaging seekers rather than the old hot spot detectors. Missiles like the AIM-9X, IRS-T, AMRAAM, R-74 and several others actually generate a picture of the target and as such are hard to stop. Thick smoke, and active IR laser to burn out or dazzle the seeker are two options being actively explored.

why did he eject?

Chris O`Crooh

IMO, this is the test ejection. Notice the changes at the rear cockpit, it is definitely rebuilt, and I think, this Foxbat is used to do some experiments with famous Russian seats...

GazB
12-01-2003, 02:25 AM
The Mig-25 was one of several ejection seat test beds.

It was chosen because of its high altitude and high speed capabilities. Very few other conventional aircraft can fly as high or as fast as the Mig-25.

Another testbed was an An-12 (Very similar to a C-130). The ejection seat was fitted in a turret where the tail gun is fitted. The turret holding the ejection seat was designed to turn so that with the An-12 flying at very low level ejection seats could be tested at different angles of ejection including straight down at different heights. Very high speed and/or very high altitude ejections were performed in the Mig-25, while other aircraft including modified Mig-15s were used for ejections during takeoff runs etc.
The fact that all the aircraft used were two seaters and had the ejector and the pilot seperate meant that multiple tests could be performed without losing aircraft.

Adri, nice pics, but the top aircraft is the Su-27IB, to be called Su-32 and is a two seat side by side strike aircraft to replace the Su-24 Fencer. The bottom picture is the Su-27K also known as the Su-33 and is a carrier based Flanker.

no, I don't think it any one of those...

it's the SU-34, I am going to get som pics to show it when I come home

GazB

Has it been named yet? I thought they chose Su-32. There were going to be two, the Su-32 and the Su-34, one was a pure land strike aircraft to replace the Su-24, while the other was to be a maritime strike aircraft... sort of a mini Tu-22M3 with self defence fighter capability and the full Sea Dragon ASW suite. As far as I know they were the Su-32 and Su-34 respectively but the latter was scrapped because the Su-24s need replacing before the Tu-22M3s (which are getting upgrades to Tu-22M5 level soon).

It wouldn't surprise me if they changed the numbers again, but I am sure it is actually designated Su-27IB. the first model was pictured near their carrier and it was assumed to be a two seat trainer for carrier landings, but when later shown with a very heavy ground attack warload this was reassessed to it becoming the strike replacement of the Fencer. (the original had single main gear, while the current design has twin main gear... and a toilet and microwave oven for cooking meals during missions).

According to "Russia's Arms 2001-2002" it is the Su-32.

The SU-33 is the service name. The Su-27K was the prototypes designation. (Su-32 or Su-39 or whatever are assigned when the aircraft enters Russian service and is allocated by the Russian airforce.)

If you don't believe me that is OK. Ask the organisation selling it:

http://www.rusarm.ru/products/af/su32.htm

(Click on the airforce link to go back to the list of other aircraft they sell to see there is no Su-34 and note that after the Su-33 it has Su-27K in brackets).

su 27k ,a very sexy plane. Russia makes some of the most beautifull and high performance aircraft. I would rather have an air-force made up of Russian aircraft than any others. Unfortunetely we have a bunch of f-18's and griffons. :(
