Firefight in Afghan mountains leaves at least eight suspected Taliban dead
A firefight between Afghan soldiers and suspected Taliban rebels left at least eight militants dead in a remote mountain region of southern Afghanistan on Monday, officials said.

Eleven other Taliban fighters were captured in the fighting in Zabul province, including Chechens and Arabs, said a spokesman for the governor.

The spokesman, Ali Khail, said the U.S. military provided air support for the Afghan forces, and that some of the captured militants were turned over to U.S. custody. He said a local Taliban commander named Mullah Abdullah may have been among those killed, but that there was no confirmation of his death.

Interesting, who would ever think Chechens would be fighting on the same side with Taliban and Al-Queda

They were always portrayed as noble, brave, freedom fighters against Russian opressors.

Seems like the newly trained Afghan soldiers are a force to be reckoned with.

Lets hope we can say the same about the Iraqi army soon.

The ANA are a fair bunch, shouldn't skimp about them. They know their country just as well as the crazies still running about in the hills, and they've received adequate enough training by the various ETT's to make them do their job.
However they've still got some way to go before they reach proper standard. There's still quite a few guys there who join up because of lack of jobs civvy street etc. And those few would never risk their neck and/or still sympathize with the TB cause. Drug abuse is also still something of an issue within a portion of the ranks. I've myself almost taken AK several times by high and jittery privates in the dark. Not that fun i can assure you, especially taking into account the consequences on ANA-ISAF/OEF relations had i needed to take one of them down.
But in all, good work ANA, eight less knobs for me and the rest of the coalition forces to worry about.
Just my 50 øre..

Cheers,
Marcus
