Has a tank ever driven over you? We had this training called 'get rid off tank fear' when t-72 is driving over you. Of course you were in the middle!!! :D

I wonder if that part of the training still exists, since when I have to go to the service an idea of a T-72 driving over you might be real nerve-wrecking (fun).

Tarkoitat varmaan että "tuleekohan teilläkin olemaan?"

Sillä itse en vielä tuonne asti ole kerennyt, suunnitelmissa kyllä on.

Joten ei hätää, kunhan Lukio saadaan loppuun niin...

Sorry about having to break the rules of English-only conversations, I just thought of replying with our own language might be better.

Old war story from my dad: He was on exercise in Germany in the '80's, and to get them used to Soviet tanks rolling over their fire trenches, they got Chieftains to run over the reinforced trenches with the guys still in them. One guy lost it, ran out and got his leg crushed (subsequently amputated) by one of the tracks...

I think they were toying with the idea of sticking improvised PE charges on the underside of the tanks as the went over the top too...

A 60 ton tank won't crush a trench? WTF are you serious?

Apparently not if they're properly reinforced...big wooden beams dug in at the sides, iron spikes, sandbags and such...I don't think just a normal hole'd stand up to it :)

I have read stories from the Battle of the Bulge about men in foxholes and trenches being suffocated(or poisoned to death)from the fumes of the Germans tanks. If they couldnt crush you they would drive over your foxhole, stop, and rev the engine up so the toxic fumes would kill you.

Tanks are designed to spread out their weight over as great an area as possible, if the pressure exerted by track on ground (especially soft/snowy/sandy ground) is too high the tank gets stuck, so in reality a trench would withstand a tank rolling over it.
A tank running over you is the least of your worries when faced with one, they have a specially designed anti-close-infantry mechanism which throws a pattern of grenade like thingys which airburst something like 10m above the ground and shower the immediate surroundings with shrapnel, not to mention the remote controlled co-axial and cupuola machine-guns, and some have grenade launcherse and flame-throwers as well.

was in a trench that got rolled over by a challenger mk1 in germany on exercise potent gauntletbaqck in the 80s
daylight armour attack start my platoon commander hands me shermuly illumation flare
whats this for being daylight
use it to simulate 66 fire
ok thinks me aims at lead challenger lets fly direct hit really spectaular effect as rocket propelled phosphorous hits armour plate :cantbeli:
rest of platoon follow suit
:( DS go mad
ones running round trying to get the flares off the lads but this is two much fun to stop now. 2nd DS being scottish and an Argyll is encouraging the mayhem p-)
Battlegroup retreat out of range sharpish
take two they roll over our postions rather to quikly and I'm stuck in the trench the wriggly tin did hold the trench up as advertised but I would'nt recomend it

Five years ago, while doing military maneuvers, I had the runs, and ****ting behind a brushwood, I realized that a M-60A3 was aimming at me.
I'm sure that the tank commander said to his crew "something smell bad there, better if we go out here"

something similar to that in the Pacific of world war two, there are videos of shermans spinning around in what seems to be empty fields . The shermans would actually drive over foxholes and then spin in circles to collapse the sides of the foxhole and bury anyone in it.

martinexsquaddie, great story. I'd have paid to see that.

ORold, I had a similar experience one night with a Leopard 1. Do you notice how it has a "binding effect" on you for days after.

Having tanks "run over" troopies is/was a common training feature in many armies. I experienced, saw or heard of it done with US, Brits, Canadians, and Germans when I was in. Like most training it's very controlled with such things as reinforced trenches and tanks moving rather slowly and someone noted. Mind accident do happen.

It's scary yeah but not as dangerous as it seems at the time. the whole idea is as someone noted to get you used to the idea, just in case it happens for real.
