Good luck to her! If the UK Para course is anything like what we had here, I have my doubts as to whether its possible, but if she makes it, good for her! ;)

Two things :-
If she does what every other bugg*r has to do - well and good. She deserves the beret. If she gets put through for PC reasons, then she wants to looking for another job soon because the paras dont wear fools gladly. I'm not confident that she wont get pulled through.
Two :- funny how both the RM and the Para female contenders are officers. What, no other female in the ranks has an ambition ? No female privates or lance jacks having a bash ? I see lots of women on staffy's and corporals courses .FUNNY THAT.

yeah, fair enough a woman can pass - but that is it - it is a known fact that women cant survive in the field.

I think its a waste of time but im old school ....

As women do not go out on missions with the men I wonder what the point is, government policy still keeps women out of front line units.

A very valid point Erik. Can't have a poster girl if she doesn't look the part.

If there are ever women SEALs it'll be my 12 year old daughter. Jesus she's hard as nails. p-)

Not this again!

First off a women did not finish the all arms commando course. The best one only got halfway through before jacking it in.

btw they only do this for political reasons.

Hogwash PC crowd is always at it, making the armed froces politically correct but militarily weak.

If this gets any more, the Russians would overrun Europe without ever leaving Russia.

She certainly looks the type to go milling, do the log and stretcher races and run until your puds drop - and then do it again. . Theres a lot of good lads that dont make the paras btw but who are otherwise very good soldiers - and I'll bet they had a rougher ride than she will get. In fact , I'll wager the DS will get boll*cked if they treat her the same as some squaddie trying to have a go at getting in.

Women in the British armed forces are still not serving in the frontline infantry units like the Paras and Marines but are often in armored or artillery units on the frontline.

As far as I'm aware, they don't have women in the Royal Armoured Corps. The only combat arms service in the army that will allow women are the Artillery, like you said.

I remember when I discussed topic - female Para - with a British major (1 Para) in 1997 in Bosnia he told me: "Well, that won´t be a woman then, that would be bloke with **** and pus..."

Can women crew tanks? At present it is not possible for women to join either the Infantry or RAC. However, many women serve on attachment to Infantry battalions and RAC regiments in a variety of support and administrative roles. Women are able to join the combat arms of some TA/Yeomanry regiments.

Yeah, I was down in Lympstone when she was having her second go. Was in a room down the corridoor from her (don't ask ;) )

She had to pull off the during the 'digging-in' phase. She did her back in apparently. All I can say is that she didn't look too happy at the time.

But I had thought she got through the next time. I might be wrong, but I'm sure she did eventually get through it.

I honestly don't get why. There is no point in letting someone take up a place on the course who is never going to serve along side the rest of the recruits. It's pointless. Until the government changes the policy (ie never) this will remain a pointless PR exercise.

We must not forget women are weaker than men. Bodies less adapted. Women are naturally disadvantaged become of the following (not conclusive)

10% more body fat
20% less caridac output
Extra stress added of the menstrual cycle.
Less bone density (couple of grams per 10cm3)
less muscle mass

Broken leg ends woman's Para bid

Lt Hands would have been Britain's first female Para
A soldier's attempt to be the first female member of the Parachute Regiment ended in agony when she broke her leg.
Lieutenant Jenny Hands, 23, of Birmingham, suffered two fractures to her right leg during the entry course.

The 5ft 3in fitness fanatic had been impressing instructors at Catterick, Yorkshire, before she was hurt.

Read the book "ONE UP" A woman in action with the S.A.S
Sarah Ford
A first-person account of one woman's experiences in the SAS. The 14 Intelligence Company was the cover name adopted by a secretive unit set up by the SAS during the early 1970s to conduct surveillance operations in Northern Ireland. Using techniques developed by the SAS and military intelligence over the years, they succeeded in taking the war to the IRA with devastating effect over the next 20 years. This unit recruits and trains women on a basis of equality with men. Sarah Ford describes the rigorous physical and psychological training she underwent, the missions she went on and what it was like being a young woman in the most macho world of all.

Apparently, some ex-14 Int women got the right to wear the SAS beret and Winged dagger.

I remember seeing a picture of a women in DPM with a SAS sand beret and badge in "Mars & Minerva" the Brit SF magazine in the late 90s.

The caption was "one of ours"...a Brit SF member told me they were former 14 Int.
