I have a class called "Web Design" and we learn how to do stuff like make web pages using HTML and JavaScript, and learn how to use PhotoShop, Macromedia Flash, Dream weaver, and PowerPoint.

I have an assignment for PowerPoint, it's called, "A Time In History". I want to do it on Snipers, more specifically World War II snipers... I'm worried that people in my class will think I'm weird, or something like that. My school is EXTREMLY liberal, so I gotta be careful.

So I come here to seek wisdom of others on a project that I can do about the military that won't offend people. Any idea/suggestions? Thanks!

Have a good 'un!

How about something on military heraldry and traditions, or on various awards and decorations and some stories about people who have won them? These topics might be perceived as glorifying the military too much, but I think they might be the least controversial.

i wrote a paper and gave a speech on it in 10th grade about the marine corps sniper program developing and it's role in vietnam and i talked a lot about Carlos Hathcock. Carlos was a helluva guy. Marine Sniper and Silent Warrior are both good books. I don't remembe what grade i got on it but everybody pretty much knew i was crazy by then anyway so they didn't think it was too weird.

Yeah, I've read the books, and I idolize him. I did a book report on him in the 7th io 8th grade. I got an "A" on the report. People were scared of me for a while... but then they realized I'm just a normal guy, pretty much.

I'm quiet and keep to myself mainly in class, but at lunch I hang with my buddies in a spot that's open to a large area, so people can see I am not a loner who might go psycho.

Papabear's idea is good. Might be kind of boring though, would be to me anyway, no offense intended. I thought about doing a project on the M1 Garand - M14, but then I'd be seen as a gun nut (which I won't deny, I am!), but again, people will fear me, and I don't want that.

All the things that would be interesting to me might be "scary" to others... that sucks big time! :( Wish I lived in a more conservative state where more people are pro-military and pro-gun. Aw well... you take what you can get, right? :D

Thanks for the ideas and keep them flowing please! Have a good 'un!

Well, it doesn't help that there was the sniper in Washington DC running around. You might want to consider focusing on the medals thing like above, or one of the big generals or war commanders like Patton or Churchill. Stormin' Norman would be good if you wanted to go with someone relavant to what's going on now. We've all heard about what he's done in Iraq, but maybe do a report on his previous accomplishments, or what he's done since. The problem with talking about snipers, is that too much of your report will go into the techniques they used to kill, which too detailed for most people. They like to hear more about the bigger picture.

Or if you're considering the biographical angle, how about grunts like Alvin York or Audie Murphy? Or you can focus on the history of one particular group, like 82nd Airborne or the 101st--lost of photos, maps and the like available. Focusing on what we did in World War II would probably be the least controversial. World War I is problematic, the conflict in Korea is still unresolved (though it may be relevant for helping others understand what is at stake there), and Vietnam--well people are more likely to draw parallels with the current conflict than see the differences.

you could do something about the rivalry between sf groups and conventional units. or you could do whether or not women should be allowed to be in combat, that's controversial and easy to write a lot of crap about.

Mabey you could do something about misconceptions about the military. There would be heaps to do and it might make some people a bit smarter. There are some people for example, who cant quite see the difference between WW2 style carpet bombings and today's precision missiles. This lack of a clear perception leads people to make ill-informed judgements on things such as the current war with Iraq.

You said people might start treating you like some kind of maniac. But if you take this topic you will be targeting the very reason they would do that. They would be attacking you from an uninformed perspective, but you will be challenging that very perspective. Attacking their own weapons if you like.

Anyway, just an idea.

I just got an idea when looking at information about the British Special Air Service (SAS). How about SWAT teams? They're good guys, they protect us from bad guys, and I believe everyone likes them, right?

EDIT: How about the FBI HRT (hostage Rescue Team)? If you had to choose between the two, what would you pick? LAPD, or FBI HRT?

SMOOTHIE, that's not really funny man... saying stuff like that can land you in jail. I hope as soon as you read this, you'll edit your statement.

Have a good 'un!

If you Talk about Hathcock, remember his record was broken by A Canadian in Afghanistan. 2650 Meters. BOO-YAH! I don't recall his name, but you should find it on the Web.

The Army wants to give some of the Canadian sniper teams the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Apparently they really saved a lot of Rangers Bacon. However, The Canadian Govt. doesnt want to make a big deal out of it, It doesnt want its citizens thought of as Killers. This would add a nice Political slant to your report.

Just my .02

Don't forget to go to WAL MART and buy a Remington 700 Bolt action (fairly cheap) some .308 winchester (7.62x51mm) to use as visual aides.

A good way to start the presentation would be to conceal yourself somewhere in the classroom, and then shoot someone.

I think the SWAT team idea is the best one yet. It doesn't get into international politics at all, and everyone hates those drug dealers that they've seen in countless 80's shows and movies.

This is my PowerPoint Project Assignment…

Create a PowerPoint slide presentation using a theme from history (this would include ANYTHING. Like music, or sports, or anything). The subject may be one specific incident in history or it may cover a time period not to exceed 10 years.

The presentation must contain the following slides:

· One title slide
· Ten topic specific slides
· Use two of the topic specific slides to make “notes pages”
· One conclusion slide
· Total Slides = 12 (minimum)

Incorporate the following features into your presentation:

· Background color or background design for slides
· Different font colors and font sizes
· WordArt
· Slide transmission
· Slide animation

Content:

· Summarize information on each slide – do not copy from the Internet……use your own words
· Include one map with pointers
· Include two graphics from the Internet
· Include one (minimum) Internet link to a related site

Printing:

· Print all slides as handouts/6 per page
· Print 2 notes pages (to be used for the oral presentation)_

Thinking about doing slides on the LADP SWAT, and would include information about:

· Snipers
· Weapons
· Types of missions preformed (Raids, drug seizures, hostage rescue, etc.)
· How/when/who SWAT was first created
· SWAT’s primary mission.

Can’t really think of anything else. I do need some links with pics and info, as I couldn’t find any good information. I found SOME, but not a lot... Only good one worth mentioning would be http://www.specwarnet.net/taclink/ but even that isn’t entirely helpful.

If you could find pics, animation, and information about LAPD SWAT, I’d be extremely grateful!

Thanks everyone! Have a good ‘un!

Smoothie: maybe, but did that Canadian have 93 confirmed kills and over 200 unconfirmed? Did that guy have to stalk an opposing sniper for days in a jungle valley, taking a shot at him just before the opponent did himself? Did the Canadian have to go far behind enemy lines and spend 4 sleepless days crawling around a high-ranking General's villa, and then having to SPRINT miles back to his LZ after taking him out?

Nah, didn't think so. Carlos was a legend. RIP.

I've got the SWAT 3 disk, and I've been thinking about using the videos there to show what SWAT can do. Is that a good idea? Can it somehow be used (or linked) to PowerPoint, or should I forget the video altogether?

yeah, carlos was the sh**. i read that one of the factors that played into the canadian making such a long shot was the high altitude (thin air) so i guess the bullet went farther and he was using a 50 cal. plus i think i read that it took more than one shot to get a hit on the guy. just think what carlos could have done with the 50 cal sniper rifles and optics we have today.

Relax Ratamacue,

I said nothing in my post to trivialize What Carlos Hathcock accomplished. I just wanted to make sure the guy doing the presentation was up to speed on the current record. There was not a lot of press on it.
Since certain members of this board will argue for days over a M-240G or 240B etc. Whats wrong with a little education?

It took them 2 Shots, I believe the 1st shot blew a bag out of the targets hand.

Hathcock Made his shot with a .50 cal also. A Browning .50 Cal Machine Gun that was modified for single shot use. He had 45 inches of Barrel, the McMillian has 35.5 I think.

Carlos had a longer barrel, but the Canadians had better ammo. Carlos had Heat Mirage and Humidity, the Canadians had a lot of wind.

There are a ton of factors to consider, and both shots are outstanding. And Although the Candians may not have 93 confirmed kills. They did kill between 25 and 40 Taliban in one day.

Check out Simo Hayha, A Finn who killed 500+ Russians in a 9 month period.

WEll, in the SWAT 3 disk, it's the second disk. THis came with the newer version, the "Tactical Game of the Year Edition". The earlier edition, from what I understand, dosen't have the videos.

In the second disk, it should just pop up, and you can select what you want to view, it's a SWAT tactics disk.

so the hell what if they think your weird, they are probly a bunch of nerds who wouldnt know the difference between the army and the marines. besides, they need to learn about things like snipers because they are all part of the force that defends their freedom. and if they laugh, tell them to 'suck **** or die trying!' lol

In any discussion appeal to the audience's reasoning, hence "appeal to reason". Note the importance in the presentation of the benefits of a well placed shot. Also, discuss the absence of snipers on the battlefield. Site examples through the presentation, such as GSGT Hathcock's .50 cal shot on a senior NVA officer, the Marine Scout/Snipers in Mogadishu in maintaining order, find info on circumstances where snipers would have probably benefited the mission(SEALS at Padilla Airfield), the list goes on and on. Get the picture??

odh2507, I am of German ancestry, but I am not (nor I ever have been) a German citizen. I am proud of my German heritage. I go to El Cerrito High School in El Cerrito, California.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to find the information I need about the LAPD SWAT. Most of my searches are flooded with stuff about the SWAT 3 game, thus making it hard (and frustrating) to find the real information I need.

I'm looking for information on the following:

· LAPD SWAT Snipers
· LAPD SWAT's Weapons/Arsenal
· Types of missions preformed (Raids, drug seizures, hostage rescue, etc.)
· SWAT’s primary mission

Thanks! Have a good 'un!

I know you're interest is in LAPD, but have you considered contacting/e-mailing SFPD and checking to see if they might have something for you?

yeah maybe you could have the sfpd swat team come in and do a demonstration. my local swat team did a demonstration for a group i was in at school, it was badass. they screeched into this parking lot where a car was parked with three people in it and jumped out of the back of a van and jumped on the hood of this car and stuck a shotgun to the back glass of this car and they had mp5s and all kinds of cool sh**. they also had a police dog chase down this guy and chew the **** out of him.

I would check out www.historychannel.com, you may be able to buy a video with some info of what you want. I also recomend getting the first SWAT game; it has a wealth of information/videos on the formation and tactics/weapons (Although abit dated by todays standards).

I've just got to get in on the Carlos vs the Kanuk debate. I never met Carlos Hathcock, but I read a book about him that praised him quite a bit and I've seen a couple of documentaries that mention the same things that are in that book. I know nothing about the Canadian shooter, except that he used a McMillan riflle and, I think, that there were two snipers. With all of this vast knowledge that I have to compare the two (see above), I declare that Carlos Hathcock must be the winner. Now that I have settled that. We can move on to more important things like why Rambo hasn't entered the war yet. Or has he?
