Great pics Abby, BMD's, walonki & stuff :)

Once I've heard there was an idea to drop BMD's with crew in. Ever heard of it? Sounds rather unbelievable...

what is that? a grenade launcher?

The Grenade launcher is the AGS-30.
It replaces the Plamya (AGS-17).
Has similar performance but weighs about 16kgs including tripod mount but without ammo. (the AGS-17 weighs 20kgs without tripod or ammo).

Regarding the BMDs with crews... it is standard procedure for them to be dropped without crews inside but usually they are dropped at least once during training inside the vehicles... the the appropriate padding around them.

If there were an urgent operational need for the crews to get to their vehicles up and running as quickly as possible then dropping them with crews was done. This rarely included the passengers... just the 2 or three vehicle crew depending upon the vehicle type.

The landing velocity for the BMDs with 6 large parachutes plus the retro rocket pack that fires just before the BMD hits the ground makes the landing not that much different from the speed humans land at with an individual parachute.

Anyway. This is kind of interesting.

Looks like an MTLB with Pz38t road wheels... :|

Parachute landing attachment.... So it won't damage tracks while landing via parachute.

Yes it does, only a smaller, less long, and narrower mt-lb

and some other stuff.

Looks like a cross between a GT-SM and an MT-MB.

The wheels look like they are from a GT-SM, but the armoured body looks the same as an MT-M or MT-MB.

I actually thought I'd read that it was common practice to drop crews in BMDs. I always thought it was kind of unbelievable - there would be so much vomit in that vehicle. :|

It was done just to test how effective it can be and after all they decided that there's no need to do such risky drops.

Thanks for the link Abby, it looks like last test was on BMD3 dropped from Il-76 in 2003. Looking at the test crew inside I see 3(!) Colonels, one Lt.Col, 2 Majors and one Ensign. You Russians are bit crazy... :)

Great pictures!

I have a question:

when Russians drop AFV out of aircraft, is the vehicle crew INSIDE or do they parachute seperately?

Thanks for any info on this topic.

ok, thanks! i did not look at the last post.

so they HAVE dropped the men inside.... I would love to see an inside the AFV video of such a drop - or a heart-rate monitor redout of the crew during the drop :-)

Nice pics! ohh sweet sweet BMDs! I do like them, though I would hate to serve in one -- they are so very vulnerable and it is not often that you see any up-armour variants. Weight restrictions and whatnot. You dont see many missile armaments on them either, come to think of it. Hmm no great surprise that those in charge of Russian defence spending prefer to finance the BMP series, though not for rolling out the back of airborne Antonovs ;)

Edit: What a fantastic pic...

I think it's actually better for your heart because you can't really see what's up from the inside

The man is drooped with the tank?Oh man...it's pretty scary if the parachute of the tank doesn't work...straight to the land...
