Looking for images off of infrared cameras or pictures of the actual devices themselves for a school project, thanks in advance.

Here's a TI sight for you. Not sure of the yank designation. I know it as a 'Hootie'.

More pics of this on the 'Land Warrior' thread.

can someone explain why do you need so much of tape on it,
rails not working anymore?

It's a big bit of kit. In my experience, the locking screws that hold the optics to the rail mount tend to come loose, causing the sight to wobble. Maybe this is to prevent that.

I'd say it's an A2, the carrying handle cannot be removed and there are no rails on it.

other than sabre's answer, the tape and cord are for securing all the components to the gun. even if the sight breaks off the rifle in the heat of battle, you still have a chance to grab it with your hand while it tangles instead of losing it altogether.
a different question is why the soldier is'nt using some sort of cheekpad - staying stuck to the sight for hours during an ambush will kill your neck.
