Polish PM survives crash-landing

Miller became prime minister in October 2001
Poland's injured Prime Minister Leszek Miller is to stay in hospital for at least a week after the helicopter he was travelling in crash-landed.
Mr Miller has two fractured vertebrae but he will not need surgery, a doctor in Warsaw said.

Polish officials said at least eight others were also injured when the Soviet-era Mi-8 helicopter came down in a field just outside Warsaw.

A government spokesman said the aircraft had had an engine problem.

The doctor at Warsaw's interior ministry hospital, Grazyna Rydzewska, said Mr Miller was undergoing tests but his condition was "good".

"He has two broken vertebrae but without dislocation or pressure. His condition does not raise any serious concerns," she said.

The helicopter reportedly entered service in 1977
One of the injured - a woman civil servant - has a damaged lung and will have an operation, Polish media reported.

Mr Miller's spokesman Marcin Kaszuba told Polish television that the prime minister had "walked out of the helicopter unaided".

According to a witness quoted by Polish TV, the helicopter tilted sideways and clipped treetops before coming down.

Mr Miller and his delegation were flying back from southwestern Poland, where they had visited copper mines.

Mr Miller was originally scheduled to visit Ireland on Friday, ahead of Dublin's presidency of the European Union, which begins on 1 January.

Poland is set to join the EU next May.

He's fine, he walked out the chopper himself.. But still what the hell were they thinking in using that 30 year old Russian heli to get around :cantbeli: **** you'd figure with all the corruption goen on in Politics that they'd at least put something to make thier ride more enjoyable not to say safer. **** we need Miller to take on the big boys of the EU in the constitution negotations, we need him strong to take on Chiraq and Shorader and the other likes of the big EU countries who want to maintain thier power over the small and weak.

The Mil Mi-8 is indeed an old helicopter but also a reliable machine. I can imagine the Governmental fleet -or dedicated Army fleet- maintains a high level of maintenance care. This was an accident. This may have happened to a Sikorsky, Bell, Eurocopter or Augusta.

**** you'd figure with all the corruption goen on in Politics that they'd at least put something to make thier ride more enjoyable not to say safer.

Why spending tax-payer money on extras if this Mil worked ? Talking about comfort between a Russian helo and "Western" latest designs is another story :(

A German-French sabotage ???

Hey you don't must be sorry for Polish PM, he is "scumbag", we have "watergates" monthly, and he still keeps on sadle, making case even worst, I don't wish him bad in any other way than political, but he deserved it :).

Those heli wasn't new, but like you said it is one of the safest helis, and it had actual resus so why buy new? Probably reason of emergency landing was ice-ed engine inflows, not age nor malfunctions.

in polish "resurs" means time(in hours of flight) to next general repair or time to scrap thing, every thing that fly has to have "resurs"
Mi8/14/17 are still very good.

Oh, I read somewhere he walked out of the chopper without assistance. Doesn't matter really, he's fine and he's going to the EU summit so all is ok i guess except for the corruption.

Either way if Miller went down we still have 200 more stuburn politicians to take on France and Germany and the big boys. ;)

This isn't however the first crash, there have been other ones I read in an article.

Subsequent governments have ignored five minor accidents involving government planes over past eight years, postponing a decision on buying new aircraft due to budgetary constraints.

entire article can be found here: http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/europe/12/05/poland.miller.reut/index.html

Iv heard alot about that lately, what is exaclty is autorotation. And is it hard to control a heli thats crashing from 600m? :|

I can imagine it being so cause in a fixed wing airplane at least you have wings to create lift but in a chopper?

BTW, the videos were cool. p-)

Autoration is using energy stored in turnig rotors, with allow pilot to slow down the fall and give some chance to ster the craft to safe touch-down place.

If it stores energy to allow the pilot to touch down, then why did it crash?

it didn't make it to field it was above vilige it turrned and started to lower flight (from 2,000-3,500 m) to land on a nerby field or make it to airfield but on 600m second eingine went down so pilot turned main rotor in flat position and tryed to make it to field before tuch down you have tu pick nose up then put rotor "in edge" to steer next just before tuch you have tu put nose down to not to crush its tail but when you meet trees you crush :]
