ATF issues the SIG P226 & P229 in .40 S&W. Some P239s (9mm) are issued as second guns.
Secret Service issues the P229 in .357 SIG.
I think the US Postal Inspection Service is switching to the DAO SIG P229 in .40.
East Orange (NJ) PD issued the P226 in 9mm. But I don't know if that is still current issue.

for some reason I don't like the grips or the sights on most sigs. I also don't like the fact there isn't a manual safety

Perhaps it take a bit more training in trigger finger discipline. It doesn't bother me, but I don't carry one day to day.
SIGs are available with other sights, but the dot-line sights seem to give me no problem.

I have a Sig P229 .40S&W...I love the trijicon night sites but the grip sucked. A cop friend suggested a Hogue rubberized grip w/ the finger notches...HUGE IMPROVEMENT!
For those that don't like their sig grips...change them! It doesn't cost a whole lot.

Do the Hogue grips improve or worsen the grip for people with smaller hands?

How much more manual safety do you need then your finger... I've got a 226. and it's the best fvcking pistol, I've ever put in my hand.. The natural shooting postion in my hand fits perfect.. Kicks all of the other handguns in the ass.. everytime.. My next purchase will be in 45..

US Army Tank and Automotive command bought Sig Pro SP2009 for tankies.
You missed the rest of TACOM's name "Tank-Automotive and Armament Command." Their responsibility is to the entire Army. In fact, they also handle purchases for the other services and Foreign Military Sales.
Besides the 5,000 SIG SP2009 (https://aais.ria.army.mil/aais/award_web_05/W52H0905C0059/000000.pdf), TACOM also purchased an equal number of Ruger P95 (https://aais.ria.army.mil/aais/award_web_05/W52H0905C0058/000000.pdf) at the same time.
I suspect but cannot prove these purchases are related to a RFP from TACOM posted back in early December 2004 (the same month as the awards). Less than a week was given for replies. Selected parts of the solicitation are as follows:
Description of Requirement: 10,000 each 9 mm Pistols with 2 each High Capacity Military/Law Enforcement (LE) Magazines per Weapon for Standard NATO 9 mm (9 X 19 mm) Caliber.
All proposed pistols must contain the following salient features:
9 X 19 mm (NATO) Caliber
2 ea. 15 round Military/Law Enforcement (LE) High Capacity Magazines per Pistol
Length: 7" - 8"
Weight: 28 - 35 oz
Single/Double Action
Finish: Gray/Black/Blue Flat Non-Reflective
Manual Decock/Safety Capable.
ISO9001-2000 is a requirement for all offerors. Offerors must submit with its proposal a statement certifying that any and all proffered guns were manufactured or will be manufactured in a facility with an ISO9001-2000 quality system.
Offerors may propose on all or part of this total requirement; however offerors proposing less than the total requirement of 10,000 each 9 mm Pistols must propose quantity ranges in increments of 100 each with a price corresponding to each range. NOTE: The minimum quantity an offeror may propose for delivery is 100 each.
One or multiple awards may result from this solicitation.
Requirements call for a Certificate of Conformance (COC), Acceptance at Origin and F.O.B. Destination. Concerning transportation, offerors should include in their proposal a price for shipment to two possible destinations. The first price would be for the contractor's pistols to be shipped F.O.B. Destination to:
XR WOL7 Anniston Munitions Center
Trans Officer
7 Frankford Ave., BLDG 380
Anniston, AL 36201-4199.
The second price would be for the contractor's pistols to be shipped directly to Baghdad International Airport, Baghdad, Iraq.
Note that between the Rugers and the SIGs, this adds up to the requested 10,000 pistols. My bet is that these are going to the Iraqi National Guard or Police.
