Hello!
i have here some Historical information.Spanish army was defeated in the 98 war(with the USA) and most of our BB's,too.Battleship Pelayo,Battle Cruiser Carlos V(out of service in 1900)and several destroyers were the last ships of our armada, one of the strongest of the world a hundred years ago, fighting with England, allied with French against the english....
The re-arm program was programmed since king Alfonso XIII of Spain
get on the throne. The first Ley Maura-Ferrandiz was prepared on december of 1903,and Spanish Arsenals built two battleships, that where laid down to the armada on July 1905.
These two units were a provisional measure in order to get an improved vessel, until the finances of the country were able to build full scalled dreadnougths. They far from perfect, however until the first true dreadnoughts entered service in early 1914, these were the backbone of the Armada.

Here was thought that the two BB's(pre-dreadnoughts,obviously influenced by german designs)will be enough to defend the country.Spain was happy cause of economic impulse when most of Morocco is put under spanish rule by an agreement with France effectively joining the Spanish sahara provinces with the spanish cities in the northern coast.
After this theres an increasing germanic economical support, as a way to push the country towards the Central Empires, spanish designers are thereby strongly influenced in this period by german designs.
But, in 1905,after the embarrasing defeat of the Russians by Japaneses on Tsushime, the government decided to prevent this dangers,so they ****unciated the 1907 re-arm program.

After the two Numancias, the naval building was slowed down, and until 1909, no other ship was laid down for the Armada. These light BCs are projected as a direct counter to the heavy ACs of the IJN, and would likely spent most of their lifes as flagships of the Philippines squadron.

In 1910 the need for a fast screen for the fleet was seen as really urgent, the lighter cruisers of the armada were slow protected cruisers that were no more considered able. Therefore four units were laid down that year, soon to be followed by four more improved units.

Perhaps the most germanic of the spanish vessels of this time. Initally a class of four units, eventually WWI would prevent the completion of 2 of them. Of these one of them would be scrapped in the yard in 1921 and the other one completed as aircraft carrier in 1923-24.After this, the plans of this ships were shared with Blohm und Boss, and used to design other spanish Battleship, the Carlos III class

And to finish, the one that never been under spanish flag and the most ambicious program:The Carlos III BB.
The government of Primo the rivera in 1927 propiciated a contract with a Weimar republic industry, blohm und voss. This arrangement was to design a brand new ship to deploy on both spanish navy(afectated after the defeat of germans in WWI)and weimar fleet, which units were all before he WWI and never more than 10.000 tons.Blohm und Boss starting Working with their plans of the Emden kriegsmarine cruiser.the crack of 1929 made that the economic power of the armada pull down, and they had to retire from service all cruisers and battleships, excepting the most rentable and modern, this is,the projected canarias and baleares, mendez nuñez class, navarra class, and almirante cervera's class. In battleships, the economic ruin made that the only battleships on spain were the awful and deficient 'España' class, the most small dreadnought even built.Alfonso XIII was derrocated, and the new Republic re-started the project in 1931,and combined the B&V designs with the Carlos V plantilla.
The result was this http://dynamic6.gamespy.com/~moh1936/images/fotos/BC1930.JPG,a good looking battleship, strong, fast and big,a perfect flagship, similar to the german 30's projects and similar to the 1913 Carlos V battleship. In 1933 the Nazis reached the power in germany so B&V left the program to work in Prinz Eugen,Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and later,in the all-powerful Bismarck. So,the republic continued the program by its own.In 1935,The contract re-begun,and the battleship structure was practically completed. They added some superstructures and more cannons to the ship http://dynamic6.gamespy.com/~moh1936/images/fotos/BC1932.JPG
Finally, the Civil War exploded and the republic sold The Carlos III to Argentina, wich sold it to Brazil in 1938.In brazil was used for flagship under the name 'Minas Gerais'.It was the perfect(And the only ship on brazil)that could defeat German cruisers or battleships.but, remember that these ships was built by B&V,and when the 'minas gerais' was stuck on the coast, the Brazilian engineers had no repost materials to getr it out. So,they abandoned it and later they mounted a museum(actually,on Sao Luis bay)of that battleship.

On 1930 after the 'crack' and projected the Carlos III battleship, list of ships changed, and soon,Argonauta and Neptuno(Carlos V class)were retired of service. The rest of Battleships stayed out of service but don't retired. In order to provide the armada a single battleship class to replace the Carlos V class(for the economy of Armada)and get out the old España class. The program done the posibility for 2 newly concibed Alfonso XIII Battleships of 38.000 tons. The Carlos V's could be easily modified to create Carlos III vessels. And one Carlos V,as i almost said, were modded to make an aircraft carrier.Other was stuck of.In isabel la Catolica's Class, one was sold to Mexico(where survived from 1935 to 1957)and the other (Fernando el Catolico) at begginig was kept in service, but later the pieces and cannons were used to repair several ships on spanish civil war(1936-39),and finally were used by Empresa Nacional Bazan to construct the infructuous and ambitious 'D' class and to construct the powerful
'San Francisco'cannon Battery, that soon were out of Ammo,on year 1946,when the BB ammo(produced on the 20's)finally get caducity.
With the two new Carlos III class BBs soon in service, the list of the big gun vessels in active in the Armada was the following:
BB Carlos III(on construction yard); 35.000t
BB Principe de Asturias(on construction yard); ; 35.000t
BB Isabel la Catolica; 26.000t
BB Fernando el Catolico; 26.000t
BC Lepanto; 25.000t
BC Carlos V; 25.000t
SBB (Short BB) España : 14.000 tons
That left enough amount of tonnage (of the 210.000t allowed) to build another ship, and therefore in 1930 the decision to build another unit of the Carlos III class was taken. The initial works began in 1931, but due to economical problems were soon stopped. The project was therefore revised and altered, the basic project of the Carlos III modified and finally in 1935 the construction of the new ship was resumed. She was bigger and faster than her predecessors and had significant differences with the 2 Carlos III, but even if the treaty was no longer in effect, she was still a treaty BB. The ship was intended as Flagship of the fleet, and was given the name of the ruling monarch, Alfonso XIII.
The Alfonso XIII soon after commisioning in the late 30s.

After a limited mid-life refit in the 20s, when new boilers were installed and the elevation of the main guns was increased, the Carlos V class underwent a major reconstruction in the 30s. Initially programmed in the early years of the decade, lack of funds delayed the works for years, and they eventually took place after the treaty had been abandoned by all the major nations. The main changes were:
- New superestructures and conning tower.
- New secondary armament, the standarized 130mm DP gun.
- New light AA armament.
- Lenghtening of the stern and the bow, new shape for better performance.
- The upper belt and the armor of the ends of the ship removed to save weight.
- New engines and boilers, max speed effectively increased to 29,5 knots, increased range.
- New TDS.
- Installation of aviation facilities amidships, 2-3 hidros.

Almirante Cervera cruisers, not too bad, between Heavy Cruisers and Light cruisers, units in class:Libertad(ex-principe alfonso)(Sank on 1937 on spanish civil war)
Hola Almirante! Just saying that light cruiser Libertad never was sank, in fact, although this ship fought in the loser side of war, it actually won all the combats if fought, namely battle of Cabo Cherchel and the battle in which cruiser Baleares was sank. Btw, a good overall information, I´ve never listened before about cruiser Carlos III.

Most of this ships didn't fought on Spanish civil War.Bueno, supongo que eres Español,asi que en castellano te lo digo.

The first spanish aircraft carrier (apart from the conversion during WWI of one of the old protected cruisers in seaplane carrier), she was laid down in 1914 but works were stopped in early 1915, after existing resources were concentrated to finish the more advanced BBs and BCs.The Dedalo aircraft carrier was built in 1921,was a modified cargo ship.
In 1918 the hull of the Argonauta laid incomplete next to his sister Neptuno in their slips at the Ferrol shipyard. That year spanish naval architects began the preliminar studies to convert the Argonauta and the decision to scrap the Neptuno was taken.
By 1923 the new ship was finished, and she entered service with the fleet in 1924. Her airwing is composed of about 60 aircraft, 3 fighter and 3 torpedo bomber squadrons. A major refit (almost a reconstruction) was undertaken in the mid thirties, improving her ariwing and overall fighting value. Spain Got then two aircraft carriers, but the cheapest(Dedalo)remained in service, and the other was sold to Greek Royal Navy, where was sunk by a Italian submarine on mid 1941 during the WWII

http://galeon.hispavista.com/gravina/img/DdeAlba

These new cruisers were laid down in 1929 as a replacement for the aging Principe class and were the first sizable units part of the renovation plan of the Armada in the 30s.
They were big for a light cruiser, with good endurance although they had thinner armor than the usual in the ships of the Armada. The four units were named after famous spanish soldiers and artists and gradually replaced the Principe class CLs as they entered service.
