OK gents, this is my unoffical poll to see how many of you would like to see an English edition of RAIDS Magazine. While I can read French (barely) I would REALLY like to see them publish an English language edition.

So feel free to jump on the band wangon and post your comments.

Hell, yes, this way, I wouldn't have to post a RAIDs-related topics every other day !

You'd just have to go out to your local salesman and buy some French propaganda...

:D

Yes please!

I'd even settle for a subscription-based online English version.

Not that I think it'll do much good, I'd like to see an English version. My French is rusty.

I'd like to contact the publishers and see if they have done any type of market research lately. I know that they publish a lot of their books in both English and French, so I'm going to suggest that they take a look at doing the same for RAIDS.

Am I the only one old enough to remember when there was an English RAIDS?

There was it and another one, the name of which escapes be but it was something like Combat & Militaria. In the UK both were seen off sales wise by Combat & Survival.

Nope, I started picking it up around issue 29, and tried to get teh back issues, but they were sold out. The US distibutor was RZM Imports, but I got mine from a book store that carries a lot of foreign magazines.

Combat & Survival Sucks. Its way too expensive and you hardly get any information in the mag, which is 30% adverts. And the chick wearing the monthly collectible item is just plain silly. It's a totally different magazine to RAIDS. C&S seems to set an IQ level of around 20 as the standard. But I suppose it's popular with British forces. The trouble with RAIDS is that you can't buy it off the shelves outside France, so the price obviously goes up since you have to order it or get a subscription.

The Italian edition of RAIDS is not too bad, but it's a bit limited in its coverage.

Does anyone happen to have a listing of the old issues of the Italian RAIDS?
Also, does anyone know if Soldiers Raids is still published?

I've still got a fair collection of older copies in English. I was very disappointed the day they announced no further English production (would've been about '98-99 I guess.) RAIDS is still without doubt the best military magazine photographically speaking.

If they went back to English I'd subscribe again.

Not just photographically speaking of course. The technical information and intelligent analysis are really one of a kind. As they said in their 200th issue, it's a journal about geopolitics from a technical angle.

Someone back there said that most of the stuff is about the French army. I'm not so sure about that. They've got loads of articles on US forces.

The trouble with an English edition is that they'd have to translate everything. I can't imagine establishing a separate English-only editorial board.

I was just thinking about this Today, and to paraphrase GS, Hell yes, the only thing we have in Europe close to it is combat & survival  , which is too damn close to being SOF for my taste,I'm almost 100% certain there is a large market in the US and EU for it,

In my opinion, Soldier of Fortune USED to be a good magazine, but that was a long time ago.

Yes, you are right, it was Combat&Militaria from the UK.

I used to receive this one; it was better than today's C&S but they stopped publishing in mid subscription and that was it...

I remember a series of articles on jungle fighting that weren't too bad...

I bought the RAIDS mainly for the information on units around the world. It actually had articles written about Soviet forces and often had a reporter like Yves DeBay (spelling) who actually went on exercise with them rather than just using "western sources" to write a dry article.
I remember they had started putting in a section that had new equipment every month that I quite liked. Then it stopped coming. They asked if I wanted the French version but I have enough problems with English let alone having to learn French or just buying it for the pictures... though I admit I do buy a few other magazines just for the pictures.... ;)

i've seen them on the shelves here (all the airsofties buy them), but in japan their are quite a few military magizines that stack up against RAIDS pretty well, to bad i can't read them. Its actually kinda funny, theres a whole magizine devoted to Marine forces of the world and anything else you can think of military related.

I started to learn French actually because I wanted to read RAIDS . But if there would be an English version , that would be very nice .

The special editions of RAIDS are better than the monthly mag, and they should publish them more often. You get all the info on one subject in one place.

Perhaps a good solution would be an English edition of the Hors Serie RAIDS. Like the most recent one on future warfare.

P.S. When I was in Paris I couldn't even find the H&C shop. Have they moved it? Heh hehe lat alone finding RAIDS on the local shelves. RAIDS in Japan? strange. Then again, you can get anything in Japan.

I'd say I learnt French from RAIDS. I had French at school but the only thing we did was buying baguettes ad nauseam.

A RAIDs-based Fench teaching program....the "Education Nationale" would have a fit !

Seriously, I suppose that if they receive a non-stop stream of requests from English speakers from around the world, they could reconsider their position concerning an English version.

I suppose at least I can be thankful that my monthly magazine bills have come down a bit.

It is strange that two seemingly superior mags just vanished.

Don't complain, I think Soldier is a very good mag for an official magazine.

"Terre Magazine", the French counterpart, is like the Pravda compared to Soldier.

Ouch - if that is the kind of material where you get your intel from... you are in deep sh** trouble, man.

Raid is not a bad magazine, but a bit short on hard core info, safe for very descriptive articles on units (the glory, glory hallelujah -type), they are only critical when it is non-french (to say they are a bit chauvinistic would be ab understatement ) and the type of stories Debay does? Well "shallow" would decribe it aptly, he just loves to be around real soldiers, without having to go through the hard part of paying his dues by joining such a unit. In a lot of ways, Raids is written for the wannabees.

Raids if for wannabe

Just like any other such magazine.

they are only critical when it is non-french

Not true; they have been in trouble with the French army's public relation services several times because they spoke their minds on a number of issues rather than sticking to the party line.

Yves Debay has a history of gloryfying the legion-airborne-marine type of units but it's because he spent a lot of time with them before the French army became all regular in the 1996-2001 period.

So you're just reading the Yves Debay articles, are you? Because the ones by Jean-Louis Prome are highly critical and very objective, including criticising the French government for not participiating in the conflict phase of Enduring Freedom.

If RAIDS is for wannabes, what isn't? Even the dry, intellectual Foreign Affairs is full of bollocks.

And RAIDS praises US units to high heaven, so no need no worry about it being anti-American.

I really can't seem to find any info on the Italian RAIDS. Who's the publisher? Do they have a website. Care to give us an overview of the past few issues? What articles did you contibute.

Also, you guys may want to be on the look out. RAIDS and Special ops are going to be publishing some articles on Peru's special ops units and on the Czech MP SOG. Once I know what issues they are going to be in, I'll let you know.
