Can anyone explain to me how s.t. like this can happen? (mid-air collions of F/A 18s?)

Odds are it will be pilot error. While mid air collisions dont occur frequently they do happen.

Was afraid of this...
RIP.
It was a night time flight wearing NVG's.. if you've never done NVG's in 2 dimensions, you'd have a hard time appreciating how disorienting it can be in 3 dimensions..

I completely forgot it was night time, but yeah, NVG's do tend to cut on your depth perception.

This may help put a face to the men of this squadron, or at least a little history.

Perhaps it was an accident due to evasive manuevers to avoid SAM?
Not the first time it happened.
Remember when the 2 helicopters were destroyed (CH-47s ?). Apparently one was trying to avoid a SAM/RPG and smacked into the other helicopter.
Oh, BTW, latest news:

I think he's refering to the two Black Hawks that crashed on Nov. 15, 2003. Reports concluded that they collided after trying to avoid a rocket-propelled grenade attack.
