Migrants risking Greek minefields
By Richard Galpin
BBC News, Athens

In the far north-eastern corner of Greece, along the sensitive border with Turkey, lie the killing fields of the European Union.
It is not known exactly how many people have died or been maimed in this region since the Greek army planted thousands of landmines 30 years ago.

But what is known is that the victims are not the invading Turkish troops that Greece once feared.

Instead, they are some of the world's most desperate - asylum-seekers and economic migrants from Africa, the Middle-East and Asia in search of protection or a better life in the EU.

Thirty-three-year-old Guma Nhdikumana, an asylum-seeker from Burundi, is one of many who have made the perilous crossing of the River Evros which marks the border.

He and two African friends paid Turkish smugglers $450 (347 euros or £236) to guide them to the crossing-point where they were told to turn left for Greece or right for Bulgaria once they reached the other side of the river.

It was a bleak winter's night.

"I didn't think there would be minefields in Greece, which is part of the EU," he says. "We didn't see any warnings because it was raining and foggy, so we just jumped over the fence."

One of his friends was killed instantly after treading on a landmine, the other died several hours later.

Civilian casualties

Guma himself was also injured by the blast and almost bled to death as he lay in the minefield for 14 hours waiting to be rescued by Greek troops. Doctors amputated his right leg shortly after he arrived at the local hospital...

Naughty Greeks. What were you thinking, putting mines down? You might hurt someone. ;)

Last time i checked, landmines are supposed to be blowing up people p-)

It is true that the broader area of Evros is loaded with landmines, which is natural since the border line of Evros is the only piece of land where Turkey and Greece are geographically connected.

Sadly, many people, including Greek soldiers and farmers, have lost their lives there and inevitable many immigrands as well, while trying to cross our borders illegally.

There is a similar problem in our borders with Albania but to a far lesser extent. There are still many landmines there, which are leftovers from WWII and the Greek civil war.

Just so I'm not confused, if you plant landmines on your own territory, and then people trying to cross the border illegally blow themselves up, it's morally wrong?

Uh, I hate to ask, but why is it morally wrong?

It is not. What is morally wrong is what the guys from accross the river do: smuggle them in for a few bucks and tell them that the road to 'happiness' has nothing else planted on but Greek roses.

Constantinople wasn't renamed Istambul before 1930 so in 1453 it was still Constantinople even if it was in the hands of the ottomans

Let me add that 'Instanbul' is a modification of the original Greek 'Constantinople', which actually means 'in the city' or 'to the city' i.e. 'is tin polin'='is-tan-bul'.

Deep down, everything is Greek :P

I am simply waiting to hear how it wasn't really the Greeks who are almost solely responsible for the foundations of Western Civilization as we know it, but the Turks..... :cantbeli:

Greece has given us everything from thought, drama, reason, and humor to battle formations that changed little until the demise of black powder. Nobody else, not even the Roman Empire, that merely extended the limits of Greek thought can say that. p-)

As you have never said anything FOR it

Emmm...hold on a sec...lets not confuse 'Eastern culture' with 'Ottoman "culture"'. The former is one thing, the latter is simply a small part of it. True, the Chinese, Indians and Japanese contributed with their profound philosophy and general way of thinking, just to name one thing. Can you refresh my memory on what was the Ottoman empire's vast contribution to the world civilization? Apart from rugs, kebab, and 1000+1 methods to hump a male buttock, that is. ;)

My question is serious...

You are most likely using an old-definition of perversion...probably stemming from the middle-ages ;) . Try to read something decent about homo******ity in the ancient times. Judging it by today's standards is moronic, at best ;) . Thats not very tough to grasp now is it?
