View Full Version : Polish PM's resignation rejected

Poland's president has rejected a resignation offer made by Prime Minister Marek Belka earlier on Friday.

Mr Belka had made the expected offer following parliament's refusal to back a call to bring forward elections.

Mr Belka, who has led a caretaker coalition since last May, wants the poll now in fulfilment of a promise that he would only serve one year.

However President Aleksander Kwasniewski's decision is likely to force him to remain until the autumn.

Mr Belka had said he would offer his resignation if parliament voted down an opposition call for early elections, which it did on Thursday.

"I decided to decline to accept the resignation," Mr Kwasniewski told reporters after a private meeting with Mr Belka to discuss his resignation letter.

Political stalemate

In recent weeks Mr Kwasniewski had repeatedly said that he would reject any attempt by Mr Belka to quit, saying he wants to avoid a power vacuum when Poland hosts a Council of Europe summit in Warsaw on 16-17 May.

It is now likely the prime minister will remain in office until elections take place as planned in five to six months' time.

Mr Kwasniewski himself will stand down in October.

Poland's parliament has been hamstrung for the past year by a split in the governing former communists, the SLD, who were torn apart by a series of scandals.

The political stalemate has prevented the government from passing major legislation, including urgent budget reforms.

In the face of falling SLD popularity, Mr Belka has said he will join a new formation, the Democratic Party, but it is not clear when.

A question to all the Poles on the forum: is Belka more popular than Leszek Miller was?

our goverment parliment is a big joke :(
1.Belka and his goverment caled themselves as "contractor goverment" that is hired to rule to spring/summer after Miller goverment colapse.
2.Democratic Party now rules the country but it isn't even in parliment and dosen't exist! moust of ministers and PM will join it after resignation, even finance minister Hausner resigned erlier to create this party
3.almoust all of SLD will not get into parliment in next elections same is with few minor "independent" politics they are politicaly dead. but they won't resign (money money money :fork: )
4.after elections for sure there wil be PO and PiS-central right wing- coalition but it is uncertain in what % if PiS gets more votes there can be situation where Jaroslaw Kaczynski will be president and his twin brother Lech will be prime minister

Worst thing is that whatever new govmnt we will have, it won't be any better than the previous one. Our politicians are bunch of idiots. I don't even know who should become a president... there's no reasonable candidate. I think we should change the constitution and let Kwasniewski start in elections once again :P

Why's that?:P He's much better than any of current candidates. Kaczynski has some good ideas, but he's too radical and I don't like him bashing and offending everyone around.

Kaczynscy aren't radical. Common sense, consequent yes radical not. Of course if you look through death penalty prism it can look like that but that not th whole picture. About offending he just says on loud what we think in private and he ussualy have basis for his thesis. He don't make "klewki" stories just to stir the ****.

As for flat tax rate I believe POPIS not mater of eventual proportions in parliment will pass it... Anyway voting on PiS or PO isn't vote lost...

Old Giertych was commie his son is national-socialistic bastard so he won;t be elected else it would be disaster we would have adolf-miniature :fork: :fork: :fork: :fork:

yep Kaczory aren;t radical but i don't like they ideas about economy PO has much better economist (PD will have even better: Belka Hausner Rosati but they are keynes students and leftiests :( i wonder which party will be supported by Balcerowicz hmm i would say rather PO than PiS he is rather radical TINA very liberal about economics hmm Milton Friedman spirit is strong in him ;) )
what party should have majority? PO? PiS? what would be better for us? (POPIS coalition is sure)

A good politician doesn't say what he thinks, he says what is the best thing to say and what should be said. Harsh words aren't the way to go. If Kaczynski ever met Putin it'd for sure change into the bashing contest. I'll go vote only to help not to let Lepper or Giertych get the spot.

Heh I will vote for UPR. All other parties had chance to rule Poland (PO&PISs most of their members were in AWS etc.). Mayby UPR is little strange p-) but they are liberal and have good ideas.

PO would create an anti corruption ministry, this would be very welcome in Poland, imagine how much $$$ we would save if there was less corruption.
