America revives assassination project
New Yorker | Submitted by: optional
"A new Special Forces group, designated Task Force 121, has been assembled from Army Delta Force members, Navy seals, and C.I.A. paramilitary operatives, with many additional personnel ordered to report by January. Its highest priority is the neutralization of the Baathist insurgents, by capture or assassination... Inside the Pentagon, it is now understood that simply bringing in or killing Saddam Hussein and his immediate circle - those who appeared in the Bush Administration's famed 'deck of cards' - will not stop the insurgency. The new Special Forces operation is aimed instead at the broad middle of the Baathist underground. But many of the officials I spoke to were skeptical of the Administration's plans. Many of them fear that the proposed operation - called 'preemptive manhunting' by one Pentagon adviser - has the potential to turn into another Phoenix Program. Phoenix was the code name for a counter-insurgency program that the U.S. adopted during the Vietnam War, in which Special Forces teams were sent out to capture or assassinate Vietnamese believed to be working with or sympathetic to the Vietcong."

Assasinating of foreign Nationals in other countries is kind of asking for trouble, especially if the intel is wrong and the wrong person gets it?
Would they be tried for Murder by that country the incident took place in?if this were to be the case?Would there be "plausable deniability"?

Theres no need to be like that. SS said that "they only tell you and show you what you need to see."

He was making a perfectly valid point. He even said "i thought" he did not say "hey everybody, SEALs aren't in action any more because i haven't heard anything about them."

Anyway back to the topic. I don't think a unit like this has much chance of being a success if the public know about it. If anything like this is going to take place or is indeed taking place then i'm guessing the American Government and whoever is helping them would rather that nobody knew about it. The political repercussions could do a serious amount of damage.

Well, we'll probably hear about their actions again when they wreck a few houses and riddle cars with innocent people in them with bullets. Point being, we'll usually only know of their failures and not their successes. Pictures have a way of getting out though:

What bothers me about this kind of unit is the fact they will be relying on mostly Iraqi personnel for intel I can see some old scores being settled.

Roger Rabbit
12-10-2003, 01:51 PM
Not necessarily a bad thing though. It depends how they use the intelligence. Its all very well having a lot of high speed units going around killing people but if its not the right people then....

Intelligence is the key issue that needs to be focused on.

If you don't speak/listen to your enemies, you'll gather very little Int. Yes scores will be settled, but it's down to the G2X staff to filter the crap/fueds and find the nuggets (the Operators are too close to the coal face) - not an easy job. Good luck to them.

it's really tough to tell. on the one hand, special operations forces were doing incredible work in dealing with VC supply lines, ambushing, assassinating VC leaders, etc. on the other hand, the US population was against the war as a whole and they didn't like the tactics of US guerilla soldiers. we couldn't win because the political goals weren't the same as the military goals (containing communism vs. defeating communism). ;)

Mr Gently Benevolent
12-10-2003, 02:35 PM
I for one have always thought that the political leaders of the US at the time laying the blame for the retreat from Veitnam on public opinion was a lame excuse. While I also think that US intervention in Veitnam was a good thing the tactics and policies of the conflict were flawed, the Phoenix program was not in hindsight that successful a high body count operation that acheived very little in reality, I have read some accounts of SEAL's snatching VC cheifs for the CIA interrogator's only to have a shoot out with the same guy a month later. :|

By your quote, don't you have anything better to do with your time then try to break a record for the most posts and get a 5 star-rank? I know you are in your Pre-Medical Education at the University of Illinois. Isn't that more important than sitting at your computer on this site non-stop to get the most posts?

Anyway, I already heard about Task Force 121 from a friend about 3-4 weeks ago. It will be interesting to see what happens...

With Delta, SEALs, and CIA in this new task force, what about the British SAS?

Thanks TP... I hope he's okay too. It's been a couple of weeks since I've heard from him.
He can't usually tell me much. I know that he's a part of a task force that is made up of members of different branches of the military and some MPs etc.. I'll have to look up what he told me. He hasn't ever told me what it's called though, and when I asked... he said... and I quote... "can't say"
If I ask what they've been up to... I usually get... "playing in the sand," but on occasion, he tells me that they've been working on rebuilding an irrigation system, or a school... or something like that.
It's interesting, but I'm not used to the secrecy aspect of it, and that drives me insane sometimes. (although I understand it completely) Well... that... and worrying that he is okay.
