My buddy works in Bangkok Thailand as a phtographer, after the tsunami he traveled to the sea side resorts to snap pics of the wonderful tourists lending a hand. Most did infact lend a hand, some did a hell of alot, others did not. My buddy was there for 2 weeks, he took the pictures after seeing the same people sitting around day after day, so they were not just taking a rest bit.

Some simply did not know what happened until they returned to their safe homes in Europe or the States or Australia.
Others sure as hell knew what happended and simply chose not to help 'cause they were "on vacation". There were some interviews on German TV that got me disgusted.

Sorry, didn't make it clear, sure as hell did most of the tourists know what happened in their respective neighborhoods across the desaster area, they just did not know the scope of things.
Anyways, if you see ppl in trouble and do not help, you are a fscking asshole. I seriously despise those guys.

It wasn't like they were going to get their money back. Make the best of a bad situation I guess. It's terrible, but you can't really fault them for it.

Whatever. Let's agree that most of the tourists in the area made themselves punishable under acts of "Unterlassene Hilfeleistung"; sorry, I don't know the translation (not a legal person), but it is something like "Being in a position to help, but not doing so"

I know he submitted them quite some time ago and since he is a free lance, he most likley sold them to a number of publications. I do not think they were UN, the UN might suck in general but the majority of the people who do the actual work are good people, they are not doing it for the money.
Believe it or not the UN is fairly paranoid about how its people look in a situation like this. I invested in a buisness with an Indian woman who was a food biologist for the UN in the 1990's. Everytime she was on an assignment she was watched by "supervisors".

Here in the US, when tornado season begins (...now), there are "weather tourists" that run around in vans trying to see a tornado.
They will watch a tornado destroy a town or group of homes with people in them, climb back into their vehicle and drive away looking for more storm action. No concern or care shown for the victims at all.
Has me rooting for the storm to get them!

I think there are a couple of things that i would like to say. I of course am already a little bombed, so try and keep up with me.
1. There is a huge difference in not helping people that are in trouble during the disaster. It is another not to help months later with the cleanup. Those who did nothing during the disaster should rot. Those who chose to go to Thailand and vacation months after are also providing a service believe it or not. Something like 6% of Thailand's GDP is generated by tourist revenue. Just something to think about.
2. Not sure what the law is in Germany, or Thailand for that matter (I am not an international law scholar), but in the US, you are not obligated to help anyone. I was medic trained and I am not required to stop and care for anyone that is injured. That being said, if I do choose to stop, i am required to give the same level of care that anyone with similar training would give. Also, if i do stop, i open myself up to being sued. Keep in mind that the laws in Germany are not universal. For example, you can chew gum and spit on the street in Germany without getting a public beating.
3. Those people in the pictures are clearly French...
4. I would like to find out the exact dates the pictures were taken. The pictures that i am looking at are of hotels that are all back together, rubble that is in piles and streets that are passable. This indiactes to me that these photos were taken long after the search phase was completed and during the reconstruction phase. If there is a way to find that out, let me know.
Sorry for the long rant, but everyone just seemed a little quick to call them assholes.
Sincerley,

**** yes, They didn't pay to help out in a war zone. In fact if anything they should have had compensation for having their holiday ruined. Before anyone says anything Thailand is a rich enough country to have a large army but didn't think it would bother spending a few thousand on basic coastal warning systems in a notoriously volcanic area. F*ckwits.

seen it first hand when I was a kid. I watched a funel cloud develop and follow me and my family home along the highway. My great grandfather was visiting and could not go down the stairs to the basement due to just having had knee surgery. So I had to take him around the long way out side. Here was him slowly walking down this hill with his walker with this big ass funel cloud right over us just rotating, by the time we got to the basement door it had started to move off. It touched down a mile away and we watched it rip thru this little town - was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Right after that my mother who is a nurse and I gathered up blankets, water and supplies and got on the highway to go give aid. But we found the highway blocked by mother****ing gaukers. When we finaly got down to the town and talked to one of the airforce firemen who came to help - he said everything was cool cause there was no one injured which was awsome. ****ing people piss me off :bash:

In some states in the US, you are required to offer assistance to accident victims on a highway. I am not sure if it applies to other forms of transportation.

I don't get it. What do you want them to do? Pick a hammer up and start building a house or run around with a chainsaw clearing all the damage in the area? They are tourists and payed money to be there, thouthands of miles away from their homes. And I really dont understand how an office manager or programmer can be helpful for restoration purposes. Once again the photos were taken by a free lance photographer friend of mine. He decided to take these photos 3-4 days after he saw these same people sitting around. These were the ONLY tourists he saw still vacationing. I spoke with him last night, he is currently in russia for last weekends events. He did mention he overheard some of them talking, and they appeared to have aussie accents. The photos were taken about 5-6 days after the tsunami, as we know people were found alive up to a month after.
I would help anyone in need, no matter the case, I guess you cant expect that from everyone. I am a police officer in Chicago, about a month ago a woman and her two daughters were hit head on by a drunk driver. When we arrived on scenethe two girls had expired, but the mother was clinging to life trapped in her car. One man, a black man was on his knees by the driver side door holding this womans hand. The others simply stood by and watched. he disapeared before before I could shake his hand.
