Riots over US Koran 'desecration' (BBC)

At least 12 people are reported to have been injured when police opened fire to break up an angry protest in the Afghan city of Jalalabad.

Hundreds of students rioted over reports that the Koran was desecrated at the US prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

They chanted "Death to America" and smashed car windows and damaged shops.

A report in Newsweek magazine said US personnel had flushed a copy of the Islamic holy book "down the toilet".

An unconfirmed report on the AFP news agency placed the number of people injured at 47 and said that one person had been killed.

One international aid worker in Jalalabad told the BBC that he could see smoke rising from points across the city.

He said there were groups of people running along the streets, reportedly looking for foreigners and anyone working for non-governmental organisations.

All UN and other foreign aid workers in the city have been told to move to bunkers or other safe areas.

The Associated Press news agency reports that the protesters threw stones at a group of US military vehicles.

It said US soldiers fired in the air before quickly leaving the area.

"Police opened fire in the air to control the mob, and some people were injured," Jalalabad police chief Abdul Rehman told AFP.

Jalalabad is located some 130km (80 miles) east of the Afghan capital, Kabul, close to the Pakistani border.

Its hard to use soviet tactics from air only. I think serbs are maybe not the best army in the army, but as a partisans they can be quite good especialy on their own backyard. Talk about a tempest in a teapot. The whole Koran story may be just one big lie. It now has been revealed that the Newsweek story that resulted in multiple deaths in Pakistan was based on an 'anonymous' source relaying the contents of an alleged internal FBI email regarding Gitmo. Pretty strong reporting skills there...




The original Newsweek article by Michael Isikoff and John Berry that alleges a Quran was flushed down a Guantanamo toilet (the proximate cause of the carnage in Kabul) comes from an anonymous source!

Its strange how you flush one book, and the whole muslim world is pissed off, yet suicide bombings, massacre of russian school children, 9/11, madrid, bali dont bring people out to protest in the name of defiling a religion.

Its not just Islam too, nearly all religions are hypocritical and messed up.It hasn't anything to do with Islam: I'm a muslim myself and I certainly can not identify myself with them. It's the way how they practice it and the level of retardedness of those people. You may believe it or not but the majority of the muslims are not those assholes who show up at every anti-US demonstration or attend the shout-marathon ALLAHU AKBAR ALLAHU AKBAR ... :D

after studying all major world religions I can certainly say that islam is one primitive religion...Mohammad must have thought "Damn, those christians and jews got their stuff..why don't I make one up for us, arabs..I would be remembered in history too"

An Egyptian copt told me once that there was a christian priest who was excommunicated by the name of Buheira. This guy had Mohammad as his servant. Buheira wanted to take vengence on the bishop who excommunicated him thus wrote the koran and then Mohammad betrayed Buheira, killed him and took all the glory for him. Now I don't know how true this story is but this is one version I was told.

I don't doubt that such tactics were used. Shoving a Bible or Koran (I write both as a religious text) down the toilet to breakdown a fanatic is acceptable but being stupid enough to let the news breakout is the "mother of dumb moves"

On a side note the nature of the development of the story is really suspect.
