WWII Tank Commander in Africa if I'm not mistaken - correct me if I'm wrong.

Field Marshall Bernard the Lord Montgomary of Alamein.

He was rather more than a tank commander in WWII - he commanded the 8th Army.

I don't think it's Monty but Lieutenant M.E. Clifton James RAPC, an actor who was used in pre-D day deception Ops particularily in Gib to encourage the Germans to expect invasion other than in Normandy.

The bloke in question wrote a book 'I was Monty's Double' or something simlarly unoriginal and there was also a film shortly after the War.
