Why would it be la? Surely Legion is not feminine.

In French, "Legion" is feminine. So it's La Legion.

In French all words ending with -ion are female, so also la legion.

Jean-Claude van Damme?
Hehe, same thing came to my mind.

maybe it's from his film "the legionnaire", which is actually quite funny 'cos it's has nothing to do with reality rofl

The first pic of Aegirsson is actually not from the FFL; it's the 3rd Co of the 1er Régiment de Chasseurs Parachutistes, which has been nicknamed "Fox Team" (in English) for a long time.

The reason why they are bare chested under their vests is that they posed for the camera for a minute while busy digging foxholes in the first days of the French operation "Licorne" in Ivory Coast last September. Because they were the spearhead company on stand-by for immediate deployment, they pack very light so they had to take the best possible care of the little equipment (eg jacket) they carry on such rapid deployment because they knew they would not get back to their duffle bags in a hurry.

The 1er RCP and other units there had a series of contacts, including the use of PGM 0.50 cal rifles at night at distances over 1200 metres.

The pics with the M16A2 were taken about two years ago during a NATO exercice, in Sardinia if I remember well when Légionnaires from the 2°REI cross trained with Marines from a MEU that took part in this exercice.

The pics with the MP5SD and the Beretta 92F are members of the GCP, not of the 1ere Compagnie; since they sometimes cross-train with the GIGN, they use the same overalls as them.
