how do you call it in english?

In the US Army its called MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System). The units attached to the muzzles basically send out a laser, each adjusted to simulate the gun its attached to, thats detected by the sensors worn by each soldier (in the photo their the little 'knobs' on the helmets). Th British also have a similar system called the SAWES (Small Arms Weapon Effect Simulator).

Thanks, we call it MILES in hebrew, but with other abbreviation :)

btw, one of the world's biggest Miles training centers is in Israel,
a lot of foreign army units pay a lot of money to train there,
including US Army :)

T-54s of the Northern Karelia Brigade (Pohjois-Karjalan Prikaati):

I think that those are T-55's instead, but if the website said so I guess that's the way it is.

What comes to our equipment in that particular exercise, I've always considered the rubber-boots somebit laughable in terms of image in our army, despite that they are very useful and somesuch they just look a bit odd when stuck to a soldier of the modern era.

It seems that some of the people in that exercise have also got the older M/62 camouflage uniforms, which do work real good from what I've heard but since they've been around since the 60's the wear and tear is starting to look.

I'd hope that the more modern M/91 camouflage uniforms could replace the M/62's as the main reserve-exercise clothing but I doubt that Finland has enough resources to produce any more of the M/91's for the reserves' purposes especially since the M/05 uniform system is just around the corner.

Nevertheless, we might not look that special but I guess our army does it's job real well.

Has anyone from Finland noticed how little snow has actually rained?

Phew. Here in Kuusamo (north) we usually have more than a 1m of snow
this time of the year. Now maybe 20cm.. That sucks.

No, during the summer it's just combat boots or depending on the unit rubber boots.

On the winter time we use those rubber boots specially designed for harsh winter conditions, they have these inner shoes made out of warm & comfy material.

but I didn`t know that you use now mostly russian gear AK,zsu-23,BTR's,t55,t72... he he where you captured this

Well there's plenty of Russian gear still used in our army, however no BTR vehicles are present in our stocks if I can remember correctly.

The T72 used to be our MBT for a long time too, before that it was T55 and so on. I'm glad that we finally decided to invest our defence budget wisely and buy the Leopard 2's since the T72 would've probably proved very ineffective in today's battlefield not to mention that it would've been very hard to attempt to modernize them if at all possible.

he he where you captured this

That's the funny part, since if my memory serves me correct the T55's and maybe the T72's as well were bought from the former DDR (Yes, East Germany) storages which were pretty much full of this Russian stuff at a very low price.

Mainly the reason we bought the T72's/T55's etc was that our defence forces had invested a large sum to the F18 Hornets at the time, so as the airforces got their new toys very little from the budget was left over for the regular army to use.

Nevertheless, "something" had to be bought to the service of the armored corps and so on, and as it seemed that DDR was selling it's almost useless stock for a very low price; our generals went shopping into German soil...

We also bought all sorts of other cheap/ rather crappy equipment from the DDR storages that are mainly stored here in Finland as well for a possible conflict.

Some AK variant rifles were also purchased among others, if I could only remember the designs name...

Most of the other stuff has also came straight from direct arms deals with the Russians , if I can remember correctly the older AA-guns that we use (zsu-23?) are one of the many results of those deals.

BTR-50 is still used as comms vehicle and BTR-60PB is still in use in small numbers as an APC. I understand it's being phased out.

AA-guns are ZU-23, the SPAAG Finland used is the British Marksman (on T-55 chassis though).
