Just found some info:

Sniper rifles were rapidly upgraded from service rifles with local and imported parts and accessories and purchased from battalion funds. Derelict rifles such as the venerable 1903 30'06 Springfield and surplus M-14's were withdrawn from the armories for utilization in the conduct of training and operational use. These were later replaced with the introduction of the Marine Scout Sniper Rifle (MSSR), a 5.56mm Sniper Weapon System. The Marine Corps developed M-16 Designated Marksman Rifle - an RP manufactured M-16 upgraded with imported parts from USA (informally called the "Arma-Heavy" or the Black Rifle by Scout Snipers because of its heavier weight than the standard M-16A1 and the title of an article "The Black Rifle" printed in Cite Mar 6 in 1995 when it was first described).
