Chechen rebels enter neighboring republic, kill nine
MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AFP) - A group of rebels from Chechnya (news - web sites) killed nine Russian border guards after crossing into the neighboring republic of Dagestan, reviving memories of a 1999 incursion that sparked off the second Russo-Chechen war.
Between 20 and 50 rebels entered the remote, mountainous Tsuntinksy region near Dagestan's border with Georgia around 3:00 am (midnight GMT), law enforcement officials said Monday.
Nine border guards were killed and 10 were wounded in the ensuing fight, the head of Tsuntinsky regional administration, Basyr Magomedov, told AFP.
The rebels holed themselves up in the village of Shauri for a few hours, took four people hostage at a clinic and took off with their captives in tow, Magomedov said.
"The band of about 30 people has either headed toward Chechnya or Georgia," Angela Martirosova, a spokeswoman with Dagestan's interior ministry, told AFP.
The village of Shauri lies amid the peaks of the Caucasus mountains, some 20 kilometers (13 miles) east of Dagestan's border with Georgia and 30 kilometers south of the border with Chechnya.
"Since this region is practically not patrolled by border guards, the rebels moved around freely on cars taken away from local residents," Magomedov said.
One report said local residents saw the rebels and alerted a border garrison near Shauri. A group of border guards then engaged the rebels in battle and were killed. The guerrillas cut off the head of the senior border patrol officer, Magomedov said.
"This band is very well equipped and armed," a law enforcement official told ITAR-TASS news agency.
Officials said a state of emergency had been declared in the region, roads to Chechnya and Georgia had been blocked and up to 300 additional border guards and elite interior ministry forces had been sent in as reinforcements.
The incident revived memories of August 1999, when several hundred separatist Chechen rebels stormed into Dagestan and took over two villages in a region more than a 100 kilometers north of Tsuntinsky.
The rebels said at the time they planned to establish an Islamic state in the Russian Caucasus.
The incursion lasted several weeks and sparked the second Russo-Chechen war. The then prime minister, Vladimir Putin (news - web sites), sent Russian troops into Chechnya on October 1, 1999, for what was supposed to be a lightning-strike operation to root out "terrorists."
But the war has dragged on and has settled into a guerrilla conflict that continues to claim civilian, troop and rebel lives on a nearly daily basis.
Despite the Kremlin's efforts to portray the war as over and the situation in Chechnya as returing to normal, an estimated group of 2,000 rebels continue to hide out in the mountains hugging the south of the breakaway republic.
"There is nothing unusual in this," Chechnya's presidential press office quoted the republic's security council chief, Rudnik Dudayev, as saying. "(The rebels) are always in the border area between Chechnya, Dagestan and Georgia."
Dudayev said law enforcement authorities had prevented another band of rebels crossing from Chechnya into Georgia a few days ago.

These are neither "guerillas" or "rebels." They are terrorists, thugs and barbarians. I have heard from Russian sources that up to 30 of the 40 or so terrorists are arab mercenaries.
My condolences to the families of the Russian MVD who were killed.
I hope thier friends catch these "rebels" soon.

It's a common mistake, made almost by everyone who hadn't felt the
horror of terror. There are no "militants", "rebels" or "guerillas", there are
only TERRORISTS.

negative on that one. it's a sr25 (look at the magazine), it's either a 24" barrel plain jane or a mk11 with the knight's can. it does appear to have knight's rings for the simrad sight, which would make me lean towards the mk11. however, when i zoom i don't see the pop up front sights on top of the gas block, which pushes me back to a 24' plain jane. also, when i zoom, the pixels around the barrel start coming through, meaning it's not a can but a heavy barrel (not quite as thick as a can).
if i were a betting man i'd say 24" plain jane with knight's rings.

notice the thickness and color tones of the 'blood'. where exactly is this kid injured again? head shots usually rip completely through the head and cause severe cranial fractures, usually leading to 'brain mass' loss.
either:
1) the kid was shot and is incredibly lucky because he suffered no head trauma
or
2) the kid was 'injured' by his fellow palestinians in a tragic paintball accident. ;)

According to Palestinian sources the boy was shot by Israeli soldiers who opened fire against a group of youths throwing rocks while troops were searching for wanted militants in the camp.
i'm sure the same palestinian sources were the ones who 'injured' this boy. the 'head trauma' was made to look like a rifle bullet went straight into his head. (notice the boy behind him screaming into the camera). i'm not familiar with shrapnel wounds. are you referring to the shrapnel from a grenade of a bullet that hit something and then fragmented and hit him?
if he were shot in the forehead (which is what the 'attackers' were probably intending), he wouldn't have a back of the head and the 'blood' would not have dried so quickly. likewise, if he were shot in the back of the head, he would have no forehead. (notice the other kid behind him who is like 'WTF, mate?')
why do i have to go into such details when you just have to look at the color tones and thickness of the 'blood'.
can any israelis give me authentic photos of palestinian medic uniforms?

yeah, it's a big suss... looks like a "paste" because the blood is really, really think on his forehead.
I was thinking maybe a rock or somthing hit his head.
If it is fake, that crying boy is a good actor. :|

Now I feel split (can i say that?) for this picture.
This child can be shoot by "plastic" bullet.
But the doc looks very young.
What's your adivce about blood seoulstriker?
can any israelis give me authentic photos of palestinian medic uniforms?
I don't think that there is such thing as "palestinian medic uniforms", you can
just put a T-shirt with a red moon on it - now you are a medic.
Maybe it was shrapnel?
Let's say for a moment that the injury isn't fake...
yep, it may be a shrapel, but - why stand posing the camera?

1. we use live ammunition when we go on arrest assignments, not rubber bullets.
(the boy was "shot" during this kind of activity)
2. the young doc don't have to be a doctor, he can be a simple paramedic.

Don't have stop advice on this pic, just analyzing point by point.
For me this paramedic is not standing, but we can't prove he is walking. hard to say with a pics.
Sure it can't be a plastic bullet?
If he's really hurt it's maybe by "friendly fire"

Rubber bullets used only in riot situation , and mostly by border police (Magav) , and some Millitary police unit that serve in west bank. On operations , like extraction of wanted, or on this case , that particular operation , IDF is using life bullets , and heavy machinery ( because the fire is shot back , and it's very real ) .
By the way , Uri , the movie is supposed to be at your Email now . I think ...

plastic bullets do not cause severe bloody injuries like this. the amount of 'blood' you see on this boy is similar to the amount of blood you would see for any head shot with small to medium sized caliber bullets.
these are my observations:
fresh blood is much darker than this and dried blood is even darker than the fresh. blood does not curdle and form 'chunks' like in the kids hair. blood is extremely fluid, made mostly of water. it should be streaming down his the side of his head from the source of the blood, but it's just forming 'patches' and 'chunks' on his forehead, jacket, and temple area.
actually, now that i'm looking more and more at it, it looks extremely similar to a real head wound minus the actual wound. the blood patterns are pretty accurate except for that damn curdling. blood does not curdle, you people!
they should probably use a thinner paint when making the injuries. it would make it seem more realistic (like this one):

Please seaoulstriker, can you use more simple english.
I think you are unsing some ironic sentences.
Sorry, but with your answer I didn't understand if you think this wound is real or not.

the paramedic orientates the boy and himself to the camera for maximum exposure. the 'brother' is screaming into the camera.
posed? maybe. maybe it's just typical propaganda from the propaganda machine known as the PA.

sorry about that, i was just listing my thoughts as i looked closely at the picture.
main points:
1) plastic bullets wouldn't cause that kind of injury.
2) the blood on the boy is thick (or curdled) and is a very light tone (unlike typical fresh or dried blood).
3) the patterns of the blood on the medic and his brother make it seem like it's a fresh wound, making it look accurate, except for the fact that you would be seeing streams of blood from an 'exit wound' or 'entrance wound' which I can not identify from this photo.

Thanks,
I like how you are giving answer without biasing the advice of your interoluctor. Just facts, great
I think I've learning something today, I will be more carefull about the veracity of casualties report from palestinian sources.

well, you have to be very careful there: palestinian children being shot are almost always false in some way. as a soldier stated above, they would only shoot if the child had a weapon and was firing at the troops. palestinian men getting shot is much more likely because they would be involved in actually attacking the troops, not being propaganda for the PA.
