He took me out to the new Canadian War Museum.
It was much much much better than the old one. Very moving. The architecture gave a very cold feeling and the high ceilings and open spaces gave a feeling of emptiness. Its a very good tribute to our Military History.

I'm so depressed that the leopard is not a museum piece. I see one over by the RCD shacks was put in not too long ago. a sad day.
I've always wanted to see that iltis that got shot by the serbs.
pretty cool pics nevertheless though.

Nice pictures.
Thanks for posting them.
I fear the only chance I'll get to Ottawa is in chains.
The picture at the front is the, highly controversial Somalia torture picture that greets the folks as they enter. Many veterans were quite pissed at that considering the many years that the Canadian Military has stood for everything opposed to that. I understand the architect wanted to show everything but didn't want to promote that gung-ho, pro war enthusiasm.
What do you feel about that? Did they strike a balance or were there some heavy handed, oppressive exhibits?

Other than the tasteless display of the somalia picture, i thought it was a pretty even handed exhibit.
good pictures :)
that albanian is goldman right?

"even handed" is an interesting phrase when it comes to the Canadian War Museum
It's actually operated by the Museum of Civilization, or some such, which, surprise surprise, is a very liberal anti-war organization.
I'm curious though, what other things of Somolia were displayed?

honestly paratrooper chill out about that, the painting may be of a worse side of the Canadian army but if we don't acknowledge those parts we risk repeating it.
When something goes ****ty in the forces the best thing isn't to cover it up or forget about it.

The war museum is incredibly well done. My favourite part has to be the urban warfare area they put together to represent the invasion of sicily.

Acknowledging history is one thing. Putting a big ass picture in the entrance that disgraces our veterans is another. The incident in question involved only TWO members of the CAR, there is no need to keep bringing this back up. That painting should not be there. Putting it in the War museum is a disgrace to the people who fought for Canada, and whoever is responsible for this should be drawn and quartered.

I agree, this painting was not necessary, it looks as if the whole Canadian army has to be condemned. One must also think of the soldier of which the face is recognizable. He also has his rights, the pillory is from the middle ages, not from the year 2005!
