here is an interesting site on the gurkhas:
http://www.himalayan-imports.com/gurkha.html
on a personal note, my father's uncle fought the japanese alongside gurkhas in borneo in ww2. said they were truly fearsome, and was fortunate to be given a kukri...

Have worked with Gurkhas and they can be brilliant or terrible.
Given the choice between gurkhas and fijians that the british army have been recruiting in large numbers I'll take the Gurkhas.

During World War 2, 40 Ghurka's killed a total of something like 2000-20,000 Japanese soldiers over a 6 month period.

While (like MarkTigger) I've worked with the Gurkhas a fair bit over the years and (I think may have rather more respect for them than he has)(no offence mate - we all sometimes have probs with other units ;) ) me thinks someone is talking out of their arse.
Nama Ste (the Gurkha greeting, for those who don't know).

From what I have seen, read and heard they are at their best when well led, like any other soldiers, but probably more so with the Gurkas. A good boss who knows what he is doing and knows how to relate to the Gurkas makes a big difference to how they perform.
I'd rather be with them than against them. Hopefully the rumoured cuts to the Brits defence doesn't reduce their numbers further.

Not that anybody said they would, but I doubt the UK will want to cut the Gurkhas completly out. Being able to recruit in Nepal gives them another good population base to draw from. And its one with a high tradition of service.
I have an aftermarket Kukri thats is one of my favorite camping tools. Bit heavy to carry everywhere, bit it has served as a great hammer, shovel, axe and oh yeah, knife. Cheap and durable.

Yeah, i got one of those too. Great for a hatchet, because of its swept blade. My favorite knife, and only like $20-30. It does seem to have a problem keeping its edge, but since it is a hatchet, it doesnt really make much of a difference.
But yeah... I did a report on the Gurkhas a couple years ago. They are deffintly some of the best soldiers out there when led well. Would love to meet one someday.
You want to marry a gurkha?

I heard a story from wwII:
The Brits needed some volunteers to jump out from a plane over the jungle in Burma somehwere to rescue some downed RAF pilots.
They were suposed to jump from low hights, and 20 ghurkas volunteered, then someone told them that they were using parashute and 80 more volunterred.
Dont know if that is true, but a good storty anyway.
Happy Holidays Grunts :P
