I've been thinking about getting one of the newer Romanian AK's (with bayonet lug and compensator), but I've heard both good and bad about them. For those that own them, what's your experience so far?

Just make sure that the gas tube and front sight aren't off center and you'll be fine. They're good AK's. Got one myself, and it has never let me down. Fit and finish on them isn't always the best, but for around $300 you can't beat it, really.

I bought one without the slant or lug *sigh*
Anyways, my AK has never malfunctioned ,or let me down. I think they are worth the price. However, with mine at least, the reciever is cheap and rusts easily. I guess that goes with the whole "you get what you paid" for saying.

Sounds like a bad enamel job.

I have a Romak 922, AK-74 clone. I have been surprised by its accuracy and reliability. I modified it with black furniture, front grip, CQB solutions tac sling, and a Kobra collimator sight.

Yeah, mine didn't come with the slant brake either, but thankfully the lug on mine was never ground off! Guess I got lucky with that one. Now I just have to have the barrel threaded. I could do it myself, but I'd rather not risk screwing it up. Otherwise, I've been customizing the hell out of it lately, and should have some pics ready soon enough.

They are nice rifles. Up to par with most others. I think the barrels are chrome lined too.
Never had a problem with ours. The handguards heat up after some rapid fire though. ;) An excellent 300m - rifle

I suppose that it's a possibility. I don't really want to trick it out like to see a lot of the AR's these days. Call me old fashioned, but seeing so much junk on a rifle is a load of...something.

Before I bought mine, I had read negative reviews of them, but in my experience, it has been a good rifle, with acceptable accuracy, and no malfunctions. They are worth the money.
X2 what GreatWarASUS wrote: having a bunch of BS on a rifle is, well, BS!

Try to get an SAR1(7.62x39) 2(5.45) 3(.223) it is true that the SAR2 (AK74) used to have canted front site issues but the newer ones have resolved that. I have an SAR1 (AK47) that I had completely rebuilt at Arizona Response Systems. I have the barrel cut back to 13 inches and a 74 style Break put on it. It really isn't much larger then a Krinkov but still leagal and is still very accurate up to 200 yrds. The AK74 brake is sweet and really dimished muzzle climb, I also put a Romanian folding stock and a PK2 red dot on it. Thw older WASR were single stack AK's and they went back and remilled alot of them to fit highcaps. The biggest thing I have noticed on the other non SAR models is the bolt has a real gritty movement, especially when compared to a milled AK. One of the nicest Staped AK's that I have shot recently is the VectorArms and the Siaga, but they are in the 800$ price range. Get some plasic waffle mags too from KVAR.
I considered a SAR-2. They have a good one for about 315 at a pawn shop; but, the problem is ammunition. Other than gunshows, 5.45 has been a tough find in my area. However, I hear nothing but good in regards to AK-74s.

I would aggree with that I have never seen 5.45 outside of a gunshow, even at a range with a gunstore that has sold SAR2's in the past. Thats what makes the SAR1 so nice, and ammo is cheap and available! I personaly like the 7.62 round, and enjoy shooting a different round from the .223. As far as SAR3's they seem hard to find, never seen any at the gunshows down here in Raleigh, NC. Gunbroker is the best probably.

An AK74 would be very cool to own, I have heard the SAR2's are great shooters and have the proper muzzle brake added I can only imagine. Ammoman has pretty good deals on ammo for them usually.
