Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres has been appointed head of the United Nations refugee agency, the UNHCR, a UN official says.
The post became vacant after Ruud Lubbers resigned in February following allegations of ****** harassment, which he denied.
Mr Guterres, 56, has headed the Socialist International since 1999.
The head of the UNHCR oversees the assistance of the world's 17 million homeless people.
He or she is in charge of 6,000 staff in 115 countries.
Mr Guterres served as Portugal's prime minister from 1995 until 2001, when he stepped down after his Socialist Party suffered surprise losses in local council elections.
He was chosen from eight candidates.
Mr Lubbers, a former Dutch Prime Minister, said he was quitting because of a lack of confidence in him.
