I think they're heavily modified Micro Uzi's. I remember seeing a few close up pictures of them, they've been pretty dramatically changed.

Interesting Japanese PDW/machine pistol. Can anyone ID what it is?The funny thing is, that this SMG is just called "9mm submachinegun", fed by 9mm x 19 Parabellum. This weapon was introduced in 1999, and was designed as somehwat of Japanese PDW - to self-defence of airborne soldiers, gunners etc. It is produced by company called ミネベア ;) It's own Japan product, not a UZI copy, despite of external similarity.

Weight - 2,8kg
Total length - 398mm
Barrel length - 120mm
Rate of fire - ca. 1100 rpm
Magazine - 25rds

How come when I look at those Japanese soldiers the image of a bad Godzilla movie comes to mind? As for the UZI's,those guys are in for big trouble if that's what they brought to the party. Those things are wortless, spray and pray at best!

I wouldn't want one of those SMGs for any type of military work, but you've gotta admit, they must be alot of fun to shoot on a 25m range.

Thanks Remov for the info and HE219 for the great photos. Always interesting to learn about a firearm that one didn't know previously existed. It seems to be a bit over-engineered and under powered for today's battlefield. Obviously, the Japanese haven't had too much small arms field experience in last 50 years.

The technical info and photos provided by forum members continue to make this a great site. Too bad some of the other threads continue to be bogged down in a morass of political immaturity, nationalistic rants and flame wars. But that's the internet for you ;)

remov - djen kuje.
what's up with this gun? am i wrong or does this thing have three (count 'em) sights? a post at the front, a notch at the rear and another post built into the cocking handle! way wacky!
i'd have thought it was a closed bolt, but from some of the side shots it appears to fire from an open bolt. also, notice the ported barrel.
no uzi-like safety.
the mag release looks lie a giant external cartridge extractor. must be cumbersome.
in the close pic showing the left side, it looks like there's a lever behind the selector, could that be a safety? what a weird place for a control mechanism.
two pic's down (no more chain, left side, brown grips with sling attached), clearly shows a latch above/in-front of the trigger, the way it's notched looks like it interacts with the trigger in some way.
interesting. thanks for the pics.

I believe the bolt-cocking lever has only a groove to 'allow an unobstructed view' between the front and rear sights only, just like on the UZI.
