ANKARA - AP

Leaders of Orthodox churches across the world gathered in Istanbul yesterday for a rare meeting to discuss whether or not to stop recognizing the embattled patriarch of Jerusalem, Irineos I.

The pan-Orthodox synod, or governing council, brought together representatives of the world's main 14 Orthodox churches, including Greece, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Finland and Poland. Istanbul-based Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartolomeos, recognized by the participating Orthodox leaders as the “ecumenical patriarch,” presided over the synod.

The Istanbul proceedings are the first major pan-Orthodox summit in more than a decade. The gathering has no authority to formally dismiss Irineos or pick his successor, as this duty rests solely with the synod of the Jerusalem church, which Irineos refuses to convene. However, leading clerics from churches in other Orthodox countries may use the Istanbul meeting to further isolate Irineos.

Irineos is facing calls from his own church members to quit his post over explosive allegations that his church leased property to Jewish investors in east Jerusalem, which Palestinians consider their capital. Irineos has persistently refused to resign.

A former financial adviser to Irineos is accused of giving Jewish investors 198-year leases for two church-owned hostels and several shops in the Old City. Palestinians were outraged, claiming the deals were part of Jewish encroachment into Arab quarters.

Fifteen representatives of the Orthodox Church have convened in Istanbul to discuss the corruption claims relating to Patriarch Irineos at the Jerusalem Patriarchate.

The summit reached a decision on Tuesday, May 24 that the Jerusalem Patriarch Irineos's patriarchy cannot be accepted by other Orthodox churches. Fener's Greek Patriarch Bartholomeos made an announcement at the end of the summit declaring that Jerusalem Patriarch Irineos was dismissed from office. Patriarch Bartholomeos's announcement indicated that they had to make the difficult decision because the great deal of unfortunate events that took place at the Jerusalem Patriarchate recently. Bartholomeos continued that Orthodox metropolises and archbishops' decided to recognize their own patriarch and that this decision was brought before them. He expressed that their decision was to accept the Jerusalem Patriarch's metropolises' and archbishops' decision to recognize their own patriarch. The Greek Patriarch revealed that they had first asked Patriarch Irineos to resign on his own free will; however, he refused the offer.

Jerulaem Patriarch Irineos was the first patriarchto leave the nine-hour summit held at the Haghia Yorgi Church (the Church of St. George) located in the grounds of the Fener Greek Patriarchate in the Balat neighborhood of Istanbul. In response to journalists' question asking if he will resign, Patriarch Irineos made a hand gesture suggesting, "no". Leaving the meeting, Kesarias Vasilios, the 1st Metropolis of Jerusalem Patriarchate, told journalists that for them the case is closed and noted that they do not accept Irineos's patriarchy. The Petras Metropolis of the Jerusalem Patriarchate Karnilios, on the other hand, expressed that Irineos's name was erased from all Orthodox Churches.

the one major flaw of the Orthodoxy: no control over other the affairs of erring bishops.

Are you suggesting that this is not an issue in Catholicism? :D

Actually, as stated above the authority rests with the synod of the individual autocephalus church.

Unlike the Catholics, with their single all knowing dictatorial head of the church, we prefer the junta approach. :D

Think of it as the religious federal organization where the president (the Patriarch of Constantinople) is but a titular president.

One advantage of the confederacy though is that if you disagree with one synod you can be welcome in another and still be Orthodox. ;)

The Orthodox church is more 'democratic' than the Catholic. The Ecumenical Patriarch is only 'first among equals' in order to preside on Synods. The Pope is the one life-time leader who has the priviledge of infallibility. The Patriarch can be stood down if voted so. The Pope not. He is there for life and his decisions are final.

Plus, they wear cooler threads than the Catholics.

All you christians are insane, I mean foreal, I saw you trying to light that thing in the church in Jerusalem (we call it the grave church), anyway, the Armenians and the Greeks tried to kill eachother just so their candidate will light that ****ed up torch.
At the end the Greek patriarch pushed the Armenian one and was able to light it first, and he was so happy like he just won a fight vs. Mike Tyson.

Nice, all this coming from the guys who like to blow up Mosques and run over Orthodox Churches with Merkava tanks. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Moledet, Thats the party that wants to ethnicly cleanse Palestine of all Arabs right?

Yeah, I personaly blow up mosques every friday, it's like a national holiday around here.
And churches are even more fun to blow up, they burn better.

Can't see what's your problem with what I said, don't you agree that it's "a bit" twisted to fight over which patriarch will light some torch? You should have seen it, thousands of people fighting eachother inside and outside the church.

And Moledet supports transffering the palestinians to the palestinian state or to anywhere around the world (except of Israel) out of their free-will (giving them compensation, work and an appartment).

BTW, Israelis tommorrow it's Tel Aviv's Urban Moto Music fesitval (Dizingof square), don't miss it.
And now i'm going to burn some wood (it's lag bahomer today).

You might not but some of your people sure as hell do.

My problem is you made a blanket statement of all Christians. If I had made a comment to the effect that all Jews are insane because they stand around banging their heads up against a wall while passing little notes, I would have been branded an Anti-Semite.

And Moledet supports transffering the palestinians to the palestinian state or to anywhere around the world (except of Israel) out of their free-will (giving them compensation, work and an appartment).

You mean transferring Palestinians to Jordan not Palestine; furthermore, Rahavem Zeevi advocated forced transfer for a long time befor having to backpedal on his message of hate.

Zeevi made it quite clear that he supported forced transfer. He famously compared Palestinians to "lice" and "cancer". On different occasions, Zeevi also called for the invasion and conquest of Jordan and the resettlement of Palestinians into it. It should be noted that Jordan had already signed a formal peace treaty with Israel at the time. More often than not, other Moledet party members had to follow up on these declarations with apologetic explanations that he was misunderstood and in fact Moledet supports only voluntary transfer.

This post does not deserve any sort of response. Despite that fact that I dont care about any religion, i must say that you are simply an idiot for having said what you said.

Saying "all you christians are insane" was just a way to express myself, I didn't mean that literally, it was said in an exagerration tone.

As I said, you should've been there, if the riot police would have not been there to put the Armenians in one side and the Greeks in the other side they'd have killed eachother.
And the two priests totaly acted like kids, people said that they decided to light it together and then the greek priest pushed the armenian one and entered that place to light the torch.

I guess it like when your dead hero said Palestinians were cancer and lice. He was just expressing himself in an exagerative tone.

They show the ceremony every single year. Its very chaotic and there is alot of commotion, but nobody tries to kill each other.

..some backtracking there! Dude, you have to remember this might be the internet, but what you say can't be unsaid and you will be judged solely on your words and the way you say them. As I put a similarly sounding sentence of myself, you should weigh up what you say. your post shows complete absence of mind .As I said, you should've been there, if the riot police would have not been there to put the Armenians in one side and the Greeks in the other side they'd have killed eachother.

I answered before that. Why do you repeat such bull****. You want me to call you an idiot again. Would they have taken out AKs and sprayed each other?

And the two priests totaly acted like kids, people said that they decided to light it together and then the greek priest pushed the armenian one and entered that place to light the torch.

That is Greeks for you. Don't blame Christianity or the Orthodox religion. You said:
'they tried to kill eachother just so their candidate will light that f*** up torch.'
And don't YOU f*** swear at my Holy Light and disrespect my religion the way you do. I am totally against anti-semitism and you are not helping the eradication of it. As I said dip your pen in your brain before you use it.

All the Jews all over the world would accuse the one who said that as anti-Semitism, Nazi, or maybe Terrorist. Everyone has his beliefs.
