Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) today inaugurated joint production and marketing of the DHRUV helicopter in a ceremony attended by Ministry of Defense director general Amos Yaron, SIBAT - Foreign Defense Assistance and Defense Export Organization director-general Gen. (Ret.) Yosi Ben-Hanan, the CEOs of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) and HAL, and other senior executives.
HAL developed the helicopter, now in production at its Bangalore plant in India, in the early 1990s. The DHRUV, designed for a variety of civilian and military missions, is operated by the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
HAL corporate organization chairman Ashok K. Baweja, currently visiting Israel, said that the helicopter had been specially designed to operate in difficult conditions: desert temperatures of over 50% centigrade and the freezing conditions of the Himalayas.
IAI is developing the instrumentation and other systems for the helicopter.
Excluding special systems and customers’ installation requirements, the DHRUV costs $5-5.5 million per helicopter, 20% less than its international competitors.
