Two thoughts on that: First, I'd say that he didnt fail to get his opinion straight; the interviewer(s) didnt even give him the chance to get his opinion across. They just kept pressing their opinion until he relented. Second, it wasnt so much of a slaughter, it was more like some kind of tag-team redneck-wrestling-journalism. The whole feature was more like a shameless plug for Fox, intended to attract more "patriotic viewers", than anything else. That is unfortunate in some ways. If Crook had been allowed to explain his views more, he might have dug himself into a deeper hole. Alternatively, not letting Crook explain himself leaves some viewers (me included) wondering whether there were some facts or other hints of reason behind his arguments that he was not given the chance to express.

I agree that he exercised poor judgement by agreeing to through with the "interview" but perhaps he really had that incredibly unreasonable expectation that the Fox interviewer(s) would give him the chance to explain his opinions? Who knows?

It actually seems ironic to me that Crook is being threatened with death and dismemberment for exercising his democratic right to challenge the government's expenditure decisions. The basis of his argument seems to be that the cost of supporting the US military is too great. Any US tax-payer is perfectly entitled to argue that the government is using his or her taxes inappropriately, for military funding or otherwise. It is one of the cornerstones of modern democracy. Perhaps you are right, though, in that he has taken such an extreme stance that he doesnt deserve to be heard.
