A U.S. Marine was killed during fighting in the town of Haditha, northwest of Baghdad, where U.S. forces are conducting a security operation, the military said on Saturday.
The Marine was killed on Thursday when a rocket-propelled grenade exploded near his position, a statement said.
The operation in Haditha, known as Operation New Market, is designed to hunt down militants hiding out in the lawless Anbar province, where the core of the insurgency is based. More than 1,000 Marines, sailors and Iraqi troops are involved...

A death is news. Even if you have no sentiment left for those who are killed in Iraq or have no interest in casualty figures, you could at least take an interest in the circumstances (strategic or otherwise) in the soldier's death. Its a military forum; there are lots of things to learn from even simple threads such as this.
