In actual fact compare the relative performance between Yeltsin and Putin.

Yeltsin gave away the world's largest and most diverse natural resource base in the world for a couple of rubles and a case of Vodka.

Putin has revised the tax code in Russia(compliance has actually gone through the roof) and he has aggressively targeted olilgarchs who plundered the country...for the first time since the fall of Communism Russia isn't broke......it's rolling in tax revenue.

In my opinion, The Yukos case sends three clear messages:

1.) To the oligarchs, DON'T f*ck with Russian politics...you either get on board the bus or get run over by it

2.) To the oligarchs, Yeltsin's stupidity is being fixed...pay up big or we'll take everything

3.) To the Russian people and the world, Putin is portrayed as the ONLY Alpha Male who will stand up to the oligarchs and "foreign meddling" and is returning to the Russian people what they had stolen from them(in asset seizures and tax revenue).

Putin's tactics were very heavy handed by western standards, but quite acceptable by Russian standards. Russians don't like foreigners meddling in their affairs(many Russians believe the West played an active role in plundering Russias wealth...guess where hundreds of billions of Russian capital has fled to? UK, US, Israel, Switzerland, Caymans, Malta, etc.) so if some foreign investors get a bloody nose....tough sh!t...karma's a b!tch

The next 10-20 years will see a commodities boom that will make the equities and property boom of the last decade pale in comparison...He'd be an idiot to NOT regain control(either directly via asset seizure or indirectly via taxation) of Russia's vast plundered wealth.

Russia cannot yet afford(and may not even want) 1st world western democracy. I suspect that most people want the Russian version of the "American Dream." And until most have it, they will be happy with Putin giving the West the finger occasionally and too preoccupied with "keeping up with the Kuznetsov's" to give a rat's ass about Putin's near dictatorial control over Russia.
