Is the MARS a German copy of the US MLRS?
Also, on another treat, I saw that German tigers have the "sensors" above the rotor and no chin gun while another version (was it French? Italian?) had the sensors above the rear cockpit/ below the rotors WITH a nose gun. Why would the germans pic one over the other?
Oh, and Ivy, those Leo2A5s are good, but the Leo2A6 is better with the Swedish version(s) being the best of them all ;)

or am I completely wrong?

Yes the STRV122 that is a very modern tank is build upon the Leo2a5 not the a6 .. But the Strv122 is still placed among the the best and modern tanks in the world as it has almost identical spec as the a6 except for the L55 gun that is mounted on the a6 .....

The 2A6´s cannon is 1m longer, and its armor was improved against smart ammunition.

what's that thing/mission ???
It is the Waffenträger Wiesel, or weapons carrier "weasel". It is a light, fast, air-transportable weapons carrier for airborne, mountain and Jäger (light infantry) units. There are also anti-tank versions equipped with TOWs (the Wiesel TOW) and anti-aircraft versions, and probably others. A friend of mine, who was the former chief-of-staff of the German airborne school and now commands a Jäger brigade, was a big fan of the Wiesel. I spent my time in light infantry and special operations units, though, so for me pretty much all armor is just a big target.

This small, poor armoured vehicle called WIESEL (weazel) is one of the most effective things I´ve ever seen.
During several trainings and maneuvres we "fought" against units the were equipped with WIESEL.
You don´t see them, you don´t hear them. But it´s firepower compared to its size is awesome.

I find this to be very interesting!!
I have a couple of questions.
What kind of armour protection does this have? (you say poor, so how poor is the armour protection?)
Was this tested in MOUT warfare (in urban environments)? And if so how did it do?

Concerning the Wiesel's poor armour: it protects against small-arms fire, but only up to 5.56 I think. I've heard that you can penetrate a Wiesel with a MG3... Armour protection of the Wiesel = the same than M113 APC.

About that Wiesel. It is sure easy to say "RPG-bait", but on the other hand it is small... and fast. The only anti-tank weapon I have been trained on is
http://www.soldf.com/images/s_pskott1.jpg
And well... what can i say, we missed considerably larger targets that didn´t even move on quite small distances such as 150-200 meters when we ran to our positions, then add stress, adrenaline and all that = you miss and get a pissed of Wiesel firing its automatic cannon.
But it´s cute. I wouldn´t even try to shoot at it

12-27-2003, 02:09 AM
Well, the Wiesel ain't a "tank" or even light tank... It's (like its name in German says) a weapons-carrier that offers more protection to our airmobile troops than a Wolf G-Wagon or a Hummer does.
Btw: here you can see the predecessor of the Wiesel. That lil' thing is called "KraKa"... 860 of those "vehicles" were in service with our Fallschirmjäger from 1970 to the early 90s...
http://www.bwb.org/Organisation/WTS/images/kraka.jpg
Most KraKa were equipped with a TOW-launcher.

Makes them very flexible.

also you don't have problem in narrow streets in old european towns when you ride G-waggen (I liked riding it -only as passanger but it was confortable, but i prefer Brits Landrover or Polish Honker first one is realy good second one is much cheaper good in terrain and you can fix it with hammer :D)

dude hummer data:
4686 mm long
2197 mm width
1905 mm height
2,8 tons of weight

15 years of successful service
Wiesel: a family of vehicles for multiple missions
The new mission profile of our armed forces has produced a rising requirement for lightweight, highly mobile vehicles offering a level of crew protection commensurate with the contemporary threat. Ideally suited to the operations of airmobile units, the Wiesel family of vehicles features flexibility, mobility and rapid availability in the area of operations. Transportable by helicopter, the Wiesel 1 and Wiesel 2 are extremely versatile vehicles which can be configured for a wide array of different missions, including reconnaissance, command and control, the evacuation of wounded personnel or the transport of ammunition.
http://www.rheinmetall.de/img/wiesel_1_2.jpg
In the mid 1970s, the Bundeswehr awarded MaK – now Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH – a contract to develop an airportable armoured transport vehicle to be known as the Wiesel ("weasel"). Serial production of the vehicle began in the early 1980s. The first version to be built was the MK 20, equipped with a Kuka-Wehrtechnik turret and armed with a 20 mm Rh 202 automatic cannon from Rheinmetall. Ultimately, the first Wiesel vehicles were transferred to the German Army's 1st Airmobile Division in 1990 in two versions: one equipped with the Rh 202, the other with the TOW antitank missile, giving it a night fighting capability.
In June 1994, Rheinmetall unveiled an advanced version of this airportable armoured vehicle, the Wiesel 2. Logistically almost identical to its predecessor, the Wiesel 2 comes in several new configurations, including an armoured personnel carrier version, a command post vehicle, a field ambulance and a platform vehicle for weapon systems, thus plugging a number of existing capabilities gaps. Featuring a greater payload capacity, the new vehicle can carry a full ton of cargo, while its roomier interior offers space for a crew of seven rather than three. The Wiesel 2 has a lower silhouette, produces less ground pressure (important in snow-covered or swampy terrain), and is equipped with a more powerful engine.

For the Germany Army's LeFlaSys light antiaircraft system, developed by the company known today as Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH, the first weapons platform version of the Wiesel 2 was ordered in 1995. In 1997, Rheinmetall and the then MaK cooperated in developing a highly mobile "mortar track" based on the Wiesel 2. Its 120 mm recoiling mortar can be operated from inside the vehicle, which, just like the Wiesel 2, can be transported by helicopter.
The ambulance version of the Wiesel was first transferred to the Bundeswehr for field trials in November 1997, and certified as fieldworthy in 1999. In the years 2002 and 2003, twenty of these vehicles were manufactured for the Bundeswehr at Rheinmetall's Unterlüß plant.
In 1999, the Bundeswehr was also supplied with a Wiesel 2 command post vehicle for field trials. Three years later, Rheinmetall Landsysteme of Kiel supplied the Bundeswehr with the first Wiesel 2 combat engineer/reconnaissance vehicle, likewise intended for field trials. Equipped with an NBC protection system and a variety of combat engineer-specific equipment sets, it can carry out a diverse range of missions such as demolition operations and reconnoitring minefields and river crossing points. Like all members of the Wiesel 2 family it is fully airportable.
Under development since 1997, the latest version of the Wiesel 2 is the world's first digitized armoured vehicle. Steering, accelerating, braking and shifting gears are all possible without mechanical controls. The great advantage of this computer-supported vehicle is that it can operate in unmanned, autonomous mode in areas where it would be highly hazardous to deploy people.

The Wolf ESK is an armored, air portable derivative of Mercedes-Benz G model 270 CDi vehicle suitable for special operations forces. It features excellent drive and off road characteristics, high reliability and low operating costs.
Different mission modules can be adapted to Wolf vehicle for missions ranging from materiel/personnel transport to command and control and communications. Its high mobility, low weight and firepower make Wolf suitable for special operations fighting missions.
The weapon options for the Wolf include a 12.7mm roof-mounted machine gun or alternatively a 40mm grenade launcher. Moreover, Wolf features front and rear mounts for 7.62mm machine guns.
The German Army could acquire up to 900 Wolf vehicles for its special operations forces.
