I've done it with my cousin once. Its was pretty cool, great way to get learn GPS skills. I'm going to try a "marine geocache" out on the Chesapeake Bay this coming summer. I'll attach a cache to several buoys and anchor them. Have my friends try to locate them in Boston Whalers and wave runners.

Heh, old (very old) topic but I wanted to get some info.
What kind of GPS device would you recommend for a beginner? and do you trade things that you find in the caches?

Garmin Etrex - 100$
Magellan 310/315 etc
it depends on what you ultimately intend to use it for/with - especially if you seek to use it with mapping programs like Falconview.
I actually would suggest you purchase a reliable used one (as you may never really use it)

Wow this is old. I consider myself a Geocaching fanatic. I use Cachemate to store all my intended victims along with previous logs of the sites and clues. I use Terraserver to view imagery of my prey. I use an iQue 3600 with MapSource City Select v6 to route me to the location or find the nearest parking lot. I use a Garmin Vista with Topo for the actual hunt. I have my laptop with GSM card to log the visit, get up to date info, or just be first to log the visit. Yeah I got a problem.

This looks fun. I think I'll give it a go. But first I need to get a GPS: anyone knows a good one that it's cheap and for a beginner?

I used to go find caches about 2 times a month. Sometimes I would see how many separate ones I could find in one day, my record was 4.
They are mostly ammunition boxes hidden in stumps, but some are extremely creative. The best ones are caches at historic battlegrounds. The best one I found was connected to the lynching of a 16 year old black boy in North Carolina. The first cache was at the cabin where he lived with his family, the second was outside the old jail, which had turned into the DMV. The last one was 5 miles off the highway beside a bend in the Tar River. That was where the lynch mob hung him in the 20's. There was still a copper cross nailed to the tree. Very Creepy.
He was suspected of raping his white neighbor, who was his age.

What are the caches you were looking for?

Thanks.
The first one (the one I found) was a film canister with a list of people who found this cache. The second one was a theme cache. The theme was "baby" and should consist of baby accessories. Unfortunately I didnīt find the cache but I will try it again.

I've been looking for a good price for the basic yellow garmin etrex on ebay, it is actually cheaper to get one sent over from America than to buy one from Australia for some reason. I've zeroed in on one, just waiting for a response regarding postage out here.

Whatīs the price for the yellow Garmin from the USA? I purchased the grey etrex because of the eletronical compass. And the basemap is the european one.

The one I'm looking at is 70USD (brand new). That is the cheapest I've found yet, plus it is a buy it now one. Looking at other ones, postage here can be anything from 20 to 40USD, depending on how big a rip off merchant the person is.p-)

Nothing wrong with a 20 USD GPS unit. :)
Too bad the software (Fugawi, topo maps etc.) is expensive as hell.

70, not 20.:p I'm really not fussed with fancy stuff myself, as long as it points in the right direction and tells me how far I have to go, I'm a happy camper. Plenty of caches in interesting place around here I would love to visit.:)

Although is not vital (Geosense works better), the electronical compass is a useful feature once you're near the cache

Sorry, 20 was for postage. :cantbeli:
You will need a topo map to have more details. The regular basemap isnīt very useful if you are looking for smaller roads or paths. But of course the needle will always point in the right direction. :)
