First of all thats a great pic :D
(does anyone have pics of just the white camo that they have on??)

Now to steel bonnet.......

here are some Israeli pics(which have been on this forum before)

Israel trains and fields an elite alpine unit due to this one big mountain that serves as a very big strategic buffer from any Syrian attack. Now Israel for the most part is not a winter country (understatement!!) but nonetheless it fields this elite unit. Most of the unit comes already from elite units in the IDF (especially from Sayeret Golani) so except for the alpine part (well after their training, they are elite in that as well) it is comprised of elite personal.

The 13th Para Dragon Rgt is the recon unit of the French Army. They are specialized in HUMINT only and are not supposed to engage the ennemy (mission failed ;) ). The H&K MP5SD is for self defense only. The pictures show the men from the 3rd Squadron that is a specific mountain/artic unit. Each Squadron is specialized in its own field (water insertion / airborne insertion).

This is the Regiment I admire the most in the French Army. Their skill is incredible. I have met several times their operators that explained to me how they work on the field (at least what they are allowed to say). Amazing. These guys could litteraly bury them for several days. They call themselves the " Shadow Warriors" :D .

This Regiment is a branch of the military intelligence, thus documented reports and operational pictures are very scarce.

this pic reminds me... my recruiter told me about when he fell through the ice in Alaska. they were walking along the pipeline (or somethin like that) and they thought the lake was safe to cross (it was January, in Alaska, -30 degrees or worse!) but he must of hit the one spot on that lake where it was weak cuz he went rite through. fortunately for him he was ok and was able to finish the march. tough bastard if you ask me...

To all the non-Americans..

Where do you guys go train for arctic alpine and desert warfare?

I can do both in my area(the BC interior/cariboo region). In summer we are the hottest place in Canada, as we are a semi arid deset, in Winter, we are blanketed with snow and presented with extreme winds.

To all the non-Americans..Where do you guys go train for arctic alpine and desert warfare?Well, the USA it isn't only one country in the world having mountains and deserts, right? For example in my homeland there is one tiny desert (ca. 30 km2, German Africa Corps trained there before goes to, well... Africa) to practise desert warfare (there is REAL military training ground there), and about artic alpine, the winter temperature in Europe is ca. -20'C, and the >1500m moutains are quite enough.

As you can see, there is no problem with both tactics (on small scale) ;)

Differences MG3 vs. MG42:

- 1200rds/min vs. 1500
- MG42 has no sight against airplanes etc.
- flame trap (I hope, that´s the right word) and barrel is different

Hello guys, my first post in this forum :)

This is a little arctic stuff from Finland. As you can see Finland (the red country, noooo we are not communists)
is situated up north and since Santa lives there, there are of course also a lots of snow and a lots of cold. We even
had a war (1939-40) against Soviet Union called the Winter War.

Santas SF watching you.

Er ikke kaldt før du har rim i fuskjegget.
It ain't cold before you have ice in your analhair.

It gets way colder than -35 Celsius in Finland, i have heard rumours that to drive a Ski-doo in -48 Celsius is not comfortable.

True. In some places in northern Finland (at lakes and so forth way above the arctic circle) it can be as cold as -50 Celsius,
I think the finnish record is something like -57. But as for the military there are not really any major offensives or
something like that when it is colder than -35 Celsius. Because the enemy can´t do anything either really more than defend
themselfes. That is were the heated tents get in to the picture. There is no humidity or anything in them, and they give a
psychological feeling of safety and protection to you. A place to eat, recover, rest, and wait until it gets warmer than -30
when it´s time to kick some invaders butt.

http://www.isayeret.com/units/land/infantry/para/para-11.jpg

http://www.isayeret.com/units/land/infantry/para/para-12.jpg those are nice pics but they are a bit old (well early 90's)....the ones I posted on the first page of this thread are a bit more recent.

I know you got them from isayeret.com but I remember first seeing those pics in the book titled Israeli special forces (which came out in the early 90's) which was in the “power serious” of books (anyone else ever heard of that serious??...They had great books and great insight on training methods and other insights and they also came with tons of pictures……they had books on various special forces from around the world.)

btw I am not sure but I don’t think Sayeret T'zanhanim does alpine warfare any more??

P.S. if anyone is interested, here is a link to the book that I am talking about......now while it is a bit old (for the IDF has changed a bit since 1993, in terms of gear and look and some training improvements and methads) the book is still one of the best English reads on Israeli special forces and their training (and some non training op stories as well)...with tons of pics.

Here is the link.....

See my post if you haven't :). Trust me it's a Airsoft GBB MG42, I got 'told' so by the owners. It's easy to clip an inert belt on, the actual model when bought comes with one... I think to hide/cover the HC134A feed pipe.

Last year in April the seniors from my cadet corps (myself being one) were doing a ruck march, bushwacking all thats good stuff and on one of our bearings we arrived to a lake. We were already running late so it was: 1-be safe and go through the frozen swamp with small tress which would slow us down more OR 2- go on the ice and stick to the shore line. We took the second option, we thought if the ice would break the water would be knee deep but after it cracked and one guy went through, and he was trying to stay afloat (he had his rucksack approx. 50-60lbs plus full jerry can extra 75lbs). I quickly went to him and started pulling him out then I fell in. Next thing we know 6 out of 9 fell through we had hypothermia, or about to, so we took a back bearing and headed back. 5 hours later we were on a road and got picked up by officers who had been teasing and making fun of us on the radios, had I taken the radio the officer wouldn't have been very happy with what I'd have told him...****ing idiot :backhand: , i hate him, he though we feel in a small water hole something knee deep. W/e i got recommended for a medal of bravery through the gvt. I'll know next month if I'll get it or not.

Where do we train mountain units in France? in the Alps mostly and in the Pyrenees; for desert, we are spoilt for choice; Chad, Senegal, Djibuti....

When the British Army has started putting together a new moutain training at the end of the 90s (different from the Royal Marines) they sent a couple of officers to France for a year and then several platoon and company sized units came to train in France with French instructors.

British SF also send their mountain experts to the EMHM (High Mountain Military School) in Chamonix, France and to the same school in Spain, the EMMOE in Jaca.

The EMHM has also trained Indian and Pakistani mountain leaders in the past. They must have held reunions on the glaciers in Cashmere I suppose....

If you want to find out a bit more about Mark Farmer find yourself a copy of a book called "The Dreamland Chronicles" by David Darlington. Farmer (Or his alter ego "Agent X") are mentioned repeatedly, he's a very interesting bloke.

This is an exercise with 33 Canadian Brigade group in Kugtuluktuk (Copermine), Nunavut, Canada during march 2003, reservists northern and eastern Ontario attended with attachments of Canadian Ranger patrols. This is the town of kuglugtuk, and its around -45 celcius before windchill(dropped once to -58 before windchill), the local kids wear jeans and a parka, I wore black liner sock+cold/wet weather sock+extreme cold sock, polypro long johns, cadpat fleece top n bottom, goretex windpants or heavy overalls, coat, parka, balaclava, starwars hood (ecw mask), and had my parka's hood up, along with the old pattern mukluks & duffle socks.

http://home.mycybernet.net/~db7/pics/Untitled-2HI.jpg

this is whats reffered to as a 10 man tent in the CF, you get a stove and a lantern going, and dig really far down on the inside, with the walls and its sortof half igloo, half tent, decent way to stay warm until your platoon I/C falls asleep during his stove watch and you all freeze. All our kit is kept outside, rifles&radio's especially (too bad so sad for the radiobitch), and then we all hook up like sled dogs to tow the fully loaded tobbogons arround with ski's or snoe shoes, or with suped up snow mobiles. The trail to the right leads up to the OP, C6 peering over. Notice the snow can be made into bricks.

Snow Brick duty, the **** never ends..... I had to build a pisser out of these.

i'll try and scrape up some other photos from this ex, I've got a winter indoc in a week or two, should be a piece of cake compared.

Those are airsofters, nothing to do with Bundeswehr. Gear maybe authentic, but there the simulatories stop.

Antti Korpela

Not entirely ;) I know that two of the guys are Germans, and one has done 23 months with the German Bundeswehr - so there is a bit of "authenticity" :) .
