How common were they in WWII?
Doing some quick net research (I have better stuff at home, but alas, I'm not at home):
http://www.onwar.com/tanks/ussr/data/isu152.htm
Total numbers of the ISU-122 / ISU-152 (the 152 was more of a close infantry support gun) were only 4075. Compare that with the T-34/85 of which 17680 were produced in the last 14 months of WW II (Mar 44-May 45). The US sent ~ 4000 M4 shermans to Russia in the lend-lease program.

its funny and oh so true too rofl
As for ISU-122 Tank Destroyer they look horribly slow not sure just how effective they could have been in real battles.
From what I have read the Germans had more respect for the ISU-100, which had better penetration than the 122mm and 152mm guns the other vehicles used. The Russians found that the 152mm weapons could blow the turret of a Tiger tank even if it couldn't penetrate the armour and the 122mm gun had a better HE FRAG round and the barrels were already in production (as an artillery calibre) so it was chosen. (note that only 6,000 panthers and about 2,500 tigers were made so having a better HE Frag round over slightly better penetration actually made a lot of sense.)
