I thought that too, the last NJ Trooper's I worked with all carried H&K P7M8, but that was about 5-6 yrs ago...

There are a lot of FL agencies that issue Glocks (Miami PD, Jacksonville SO to name two) but FL Highway Patrol issues the Beretta, which is what the list was trying to show: What state police agencies are carrying.

Yeah, I guess I was mainly referring to the JSO. Thanks for that additional info :D

We (The New Jersey State Police) currently carry the Sig 228 in 9mm. While at the academy ('00-01) our agency was transitioning to a new service weapon to replace the H&K P7M8. I was trained on and upon graduation, was issued the P7M8 and the Smith & Wesson SW99. Because of a high number of malfunctions with the SW99, we eventually turned in both the H&K and Smith for the P228.

Not that much Officers carry Glock 17s in New York. Tell you the truth, I haven't seen an officer with one yet.

All Troopers in the NY State Police have been issued Glock 17's since 1990, and we will have them forever. The wonderful and benevolent Mario Cuomo signed an executive order before leaving office stating that if we purchased new sidearms then we have to DESTROY our current issue. Consequently you can imagine that a 4500 person agency runs up against some considerable cash outlay for such a switch. The only good thing is now we have a Remington 870 (14 - inch bbl) in each car.

Is this true for the NJ troopers who patrol the freeways? Why a compact pistol?

I'm not sure if I'd consider the 228 a compact weapon. It's my understanding that the P226 is the full size version and the P239 is advertised as the compact/concealable version. The P228 is somewhere in between, but closer to the P226. However, to answer your question more specifically, yes every Trooper is issued the P228 as their primary sidearm. And it's killed almost (with the exception of one) everyone we've shot lately.

PS (they were all bad people...)

Last summer I replaced the windshield in a Virginia St. Trooper's car. He told me they used the .357SIG round. There was a box of .357SIG Gold Dots in his car also.

GA State Patrol carries the Glock 37 in .45 GAP, not the 22. However, a majority of the local PDs in the Metro Atlanta area carry the G22 - Fulton, Clayton, Henry, and Coweta to name a few. Gwinnett County PD is beginning a transition to the Glock, but the G17.

I know a few troopers with glocks, and sigs. Thier daily pieces. They are upgrading to the px4 storm. But from what I hear of this handgun its a down grade.

I'm not sure if that's correct, at least I've seen quite a number of our State Troopers carrying Glock 22's; on the other hand though, I know I've seen a few with SiG's as well...

Correct, P228 really isn't that small. I think the P226 would serve just as well but nobody asked mep-) Maybe it was chosen to better fit female hands, who knows...
