Digging for D-Day history

Star-Telegram

The rugged 100-meter cliff arose from the channel like the bow of a giant ship. The sides were sheer rock, plunging onto a tiny beach and then quickly angling into swift ocean waters.

The triangular cliff looked down on Utah Beach to the left and Omaha Beach to the right. German cannons in reinforced bunkers commanded the view.

Before D-Day had a chance, before thousands of troops could storm the Normandy beaches, those guns had to be neutralized.

Sixty-one years ago, on June 6, 1944, allied forces faced the fortifications at Pointe du Hoc. Army Rangers scaled those ominous cliffs and quieted the German guns.
