Lockheed fighter plane scheduled for Rose Bowl flyover
http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=28131

Lockheed-Martins F/A-22 Raptor fighter will fly over the Rose Bowl on New Years Day in Pasadena, Calif., the largest public display yet for the Georgia-built warplanes.

A single Raptor fighter will join a B-2 Spirit bomber and an F-117 Nighthawk fighter in the flight over the 100,000-seat stadium. A television audience of about 18 million people are expected to watch top-ranked USC and No. 4 Michigan compete in the Rose Bowl.

The $200 million F/A-22 is the most costly fighter in history.

About 20 of the radar-evading, supersonic jets have been built and flown in Marietta and sent to Air Force bases in California and Nevada. The planes will undergo a series of war games against other U.S. fighters to determine how well the planes will perform in combat.

The Air Force expects to purchase 381 Raptors, which are scheduled to go to front-line U.S. fighter squadrons in 2005.

When they were first made 43 million-

Now considering the weapons and avionics upgrades performed on the F-15E, they are aruond 48-53 million, depending on the setup.

THe main reason the F-22 costs so much is the stealth material and thrust vectoring system.

If anyone got the chance, take a look through the November 2003 issue of Popular Science, they have a very nice photos spread of the F/A-22 and its production facility.

I live in New Jersey, sucks I won't get to see the F-22. Anyway, I did see some great aircrafts last year like F-16 Fighting Falcon, B-2 Spirit, Apache helicopter and many others. Wish I had a scanner so I could post those pictures here, it was truly amazing, I love jets and all that.

My contribution to the thread.

This is a pictur I took up at the Wright Patterson AFB Museum. They had just opened their new wing (3rd) and construction was starting on the fourth!

Anyway, we were up there for the opening and the Blimp Fly In (bunch of events this year marking the 100th anniversary of powered flight) and I snapped the photo above. The F22 below the Wright Flyer.

I think I may take a photo only trip and take my tripod and get some REALLY good images. They are getting a B2 for permanate display...they just rolled out their Hustler too...an awesome site.

Thats an awesome pic, it really goes to show how much we have advanced with technology and aircraft. If the Wright brothers were around today, they'd have a fresh litter of kittens to sell you because when they take a look at something like that it would give them a heart attack (plus kittens). woot

Considering that their aricraft could barely make it off the ground in only ONE type of weather condition and was controlled, in part, by the shifting of the pilot's weight...I agree.

Fly-by-wire state fo the art all weather flying technology would have knocked their stockings off.

On a completely un related note, the new wing of the WPAFB Museum is really dark and dimly lit. The collection in there is rocking. The lighting gives the aircraft a sinister or ghost like look. Take a gander at the B1 below....

Sweet. The lighting in the museum somehow reminds me of the beginning of Top gun.

I'd love to be a fighter pilot! I'd love to be a SEAL even more though... I think p-)

When I was 12 my dad got VIP tickets to the Chicago Air Show. We were seated with a ton of Navy guys most of which had Tridents. My dad came to me and my brother and told us to follow him. He brought us into a tent and behold, two SEAL platoons in full kit. They were really cool, my brother and I got a picture with them. My brother got to hold an M14... I just smiled. Oh well. :D They did a demo on the beach 30ft infront of us. First, two SEALs came out of the water with Uzi's and did a recon of the 5-6 OpFor (played by SEALs) sitting on the beach. Then out of no where came a Sea Hawk escorted by an Apache, the Sea Hawk slowed down and the remaining SEALs roped down to the beach while the Apache strafed the beach with blanks. The SEALs neutralized the OpFor, secured the hostages, and the Apache did a complete upside loop. Meeting the SEALs was my favorite part of the show. :D I'll scan the pic sometime.

They did that demo here a few years ago at the air show but they used a UH-60 variant and some Cobras.
