...
Of whom 200 were involved in crash incidents :(, a good portion of whom included fatalities. Many pilots initialy being unused to correcting movements in the roll plane during landing approaches with the rudder rather than ailrons.
Nevertheless one of the best fighter planes of its generation, with tighter turning radius than either the MIG 15 or F-86 Sabre and some aerodynamic oddities in the transonic range that could be used to advantage once mastered.
How it would have stood up to the MIG 17 I don't know though (some Taiwanese Sabres got a real beasting by Chinese MIG 17's in an incident during the Mid 1950's).
Still I have a soft spot for this pugnacious little bulldog fighter :).

Interesting, this plane kind of reminds me to one of the experimental FockeWulf fighters at the end of WW2.
Looks like a stupid guppy fish.
Ugly crap plane.

Yes, thank you. We can see where the mig15 design originated from.

Here we go again ... :fork:
What kind of weapons does that thing carry? Some of those pics there are rockets that look like ones used by USAAF (and RAF?) in WW2. I see there are also ofcourse couple of guns (calibre?). Any primitive heat seeking missiles? I think Sabre did carry early versions of Sidewinders.

Armament options for all version, except S 29C, which was unarmed:
* 12 x 7.5 cm anti-aircraft rockets
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/pictures/vehicles/aircraft/j29_2.jpg
* Same as above, also:
8 x 8 cm anti-armour rockets, seldom used
* 8 or 14 x 14.5 cm anti-armour rockets, 45 kg each;
or 8/14 x 15 cm HE rockets, 45 kg each
* 2 or 4 x 18 cm HE anti-ship rockets, 125 kg each
* Droptanks also usable as napalm bombs, either 400 or 500 litres each. The larger, Type 2, had fins to ensure clean separation, but the fins usually weren't mounted during peace time as they created extra drag.
* 2 x Rb 24 (AIM-9B) Sidewinder

Also armed with 4 20mm auto cannons. Some of those survived to be fitted onto pbv302 APC:s in the 60s, and those turrets have since been mounted in brand-new Patria patgb203:s, so the weapon is still in service (although the constellation patgb203/20mm akan has never become a popular one).

Yes you are right the major different is that the 20mm gun is mounted upside down in the PBV 302 so the empty cases are thrown up in the air instead for down in the gunners knee.
The correct name off the gun is Hispano Suiza HS 804 or m/47D (=
