I had a ride in an Alouette III of the Air-glacier private company. It was for fun during an air-show not an accident.

Now here are some more pics from Switzerland:

Switzerland has tested some weapons on Alouette III but the results were negative because this helo wasn’t stable enough.
The replacement for the Alouette should be (if the parliament accept it) the EC-635

how old are these aircraft now because they seem to be one of the most long serving helos around. I have as oft spot for these...they just look so old and fragile.... but I understand they can cope heaps....whats the amount of maintenance needed for one of these....hen did they cease production(have they?)

South Africa is in the midst of replacing their Alouette IIIs with the EC-635 and the A-109 as well. Raj Khalsa just posted some great pics of the Indian Cheetak in service with the Indian Navy. Does that count?

Cheetak are the Alloutes build by HAL under licence..

Alouette III is a great helicopter, I'm going to write an article about it on my website

A few photos I did, those Alouettes belong to the french Gendarmerie :

The Alouette III makes my eyes bleed. Almost as bad as the old Westland Wasp. Nice pics though. Especially the pics of the SA Alouette's.

The Alouette III first flew in 1959.

About 1 400 units produced, with the official French assembly line ceased in 1976.

A rugged helicopter with excellent high altitude performances (see the Indian Air Force) but now too old, noisy and thirsty by today's standards.

It is replaced by the Eurocopter EC-135 / EC-145 family.

With so much glass on the hello......I can just imagine how easy it is to shot it down especially with that engine exposed.

Not a good attack hello.... but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Not everything was Black-And-White :) Remeber the 1984 Olimpic Games in Los Angeles. Romania was the only WP country that participate. The rest Boycoted the Games.

Romania also produced BAC 1-11 Civilian Planes, Build Rolls-Royce Viper jet engines.

The IAR 316 are still flying. The production cheased only in the 80's - 90's.
Romania also tested a prototype of an attack helicopter based on IAR-316 (Allouettes).

Tell it to the 100s of insurgents killed by the Rhodesians with their "K-cars" Alouette III during the bush war in Rhodesia in 1965-1980....as helicopter go by, not many have chalked as many kills as the old Alouette III

Give me SVD two mags and I'll take it out of action quick. (of course if it's enemy chopper)

That's what you think...the Alouette III took incredible beatings both in Rhodesia and South Africa, everything up to RPG7 and kept flying.

That's the secret to the popularity and incredibly long operational service (46 years now) of this helicopter.

It's both extremly reliable and sturdy.

Assuming that it sit still... But chopper rarelly sit still.
Look dude, tell that they where not good attack chopper TO EVERY Transport chopper that someone thought to arm it (Mi-4, MI8 ,UH1, etc). They all will say that it does its job. Maybe not like a dedicated attack chopper which BTW it has armour all over the place, but it can rain dead uppon enemies.

Alouette III was used by the danish navy in the north atlantic, until it was replaced with the lynx.
