Suspected illegal immigrant accused of stabbing deputy

A Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy is already back at work after he was stabbed with a screwdriver Tuesday night, allegedly by a man suspected to be in the United States illegally.

Deputy Ernie Romero was responding to a domestic dispute at a mobile home on Airport Road. That’s where Miguel Velasquez, 26, allegedly stabbed him with a screwdriver in the chest and the eye.

Romero’s bulletproof vest and a knife in his vest pocket deflected the screwdriver.

Velasquez allegedly said to Romero, “I will kill you,” in Spanish twice during the confrontation.

Romero was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A 21-year-old man suspected of shooting at a Chula Vista police officer and narrowly missing her turned himself in to authorities early Tuesday.
Ryan Lyle Goforth, of Murrieta, was arrested just after 2 a.m. He is suspected of shooting at Officer Dena Lansing at about 9 p.m. outside Rancho Del Rey Middle School near East J Street and Paseo Ranchero, according to Chula Vista police spokesman Bernard Gonzales.

Lansing had gone to the school to investigate a report of illegal fireworks. When she arrived, she confronted Goforth and two other men, police said. Two of the men raised their hands, but Goforth pulled a gun and fired at Lansing. He missed the officer but hit her patrol car, Gonzales said. Lansing took cover behind her car and the three men fled, according to Gonzales.

Daniel Galvan and Richard Calderon, both 20 years old and from Riverside County, were arrested at about 10:20 p.m., police said. Officers searched for Goforth for several hours, but he eventually turned himself in.

Police said Goforth has a shaved head and a swastika tattooed on his right forearm.

"We believe he belongs to an Aryan group, but we don't know which one at this time," police Lt. Scott Arsenault said.
