From the AP:
Col. Joe W. Dowdy, a native of Little Rock, Ark., was removed as commander of the 1st Marine Regiment, one of the Marine units approaching Baghdad from the southeast according to U.S. military officials Friday, April 4, 2003. Military officials confirmed Dowdy had been removed but refused to comment on the reason.

Anyone know anything about this?

During a battle the Colonel was ordered to draw enemy artillery and mortar fire, by placing his Marines in a very vulnerable position. The rumor is that he feared chem shells and not wanting to risk his Marines lives he didnt properly expose his Marines to Iraqi artillery. The battle plan was of course to zero in on the artillery batteries and negate any possibility of contaminating the entire MEF.

Sounds like a tough call to make - sending your boys forward to draw any type of fire fire is a bitch... If it's true I can see why he said no - suicide misions are not a lawfull order
