French sailor mugged for credit cards

A 21-year-old visiting French sailor was robbed early Sunday morning in Halifax. "He was on his way back to the ship when he was confronted by three males in a dark-coloured car," Staff Sgt. Charlie Verge of Halifax Regional Police said Sunday.

"They forced him into the car, then took him to an undisclosed area - because he's not familiar with the area - and at this location they took his credit card.

"A female was at the home, (she) went to a bank to try to get money but she was unsuccessful and they came back and they let him go."

The robbery occurred just after 4:30 a.m. near Barrington and North streets as the sailor was returning to ship.

The incident lasted about an hour.

The victim, police said, was not hurt but was "pretty shaken up and scared."

From the supply ship Meuse, he was one of about 3,000 French sailors visiting Halifax.

Led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, six French naval ships were in port until Sunday.
