I'm liberal, which in Britain is a centrist position, not the left-leaning one the term seems to suggest to many Americans. In terms of voting I'd vote for the Liberal Democrats, they may be bland, but at least they aren't Tories. As for Labour, I don't know, its mostly ideology that turns me against them.

JFK too, lost the popular vote.
Anyways, Gore won the popular vote that ‘was counted’ by about 500,000. If I remember correctly, there was a least 1,000,000 write-in votes that were not counted in California. It was decided that it was not worth the time and money to count these votes because Gore won the state by about 1,300,000 votes.
If these votes had been counted, and assuming that a large percent of these votes were military, the outcome of the popular vote may have been different.

Libertarian...
Traditionally I have voted Republican or Conservative Democrat depending on whether it is a local or Federal election (in Kentucky regardless of party, you are pro-gun :) ).
I was looking at considering registering as a Republican, but I no longer see the party's Federal political members as being Republican/Conservatives. Small unobtrusive and non-income taxing federal government that recognizes the Bill of Rights as LAW, neither party is giving us that (though Republicans claim that they are) or is even trying. The Democrats (at a Federal level) are so much worse in this regard I do not even consider them and of course, BOTH love to feed from the tax-payer trough!
If there was a New Madisonian Party, I would join in a heartbeat.

woot He really was a great President. Now that man was able to talk his way out of wars. A true diplomat who used every tool at his disposal, including the threat of force. Of course, he was so good at it, he never had to use force. He stood for something, and he actually backed it up. No offense to all the other Presidents, least of all Washington, Lincoln, etc. because they were all great too, but it might not be an overstatement to say that Teddy Roosevelt was the best President the US has ever had. I mean, I haven't even actually liked a President since Kennedy (who was far from perfect, but at least I found a few redeeming qualities in him). Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

Being 33, a tax payer, a small business owner, and a voter that has not missed a single election locally or federally, I will argue this.
No health care is free. Someone pays for it. I am more than willing to allow local governments, through due process and representation to deal with the issue. However, when it comes to a National Government, in my case, the Federal Government of the United States, I can not tolerate it. Beuracratic fat and mispending of tax payers' dollars is almsot ALWAYS present and the actual value of the tax dollar becomes dimes on the dollar.
As far as the real world goes, well, I busted my ass getting to where I am and worked hard. I see people irking a living making it by on two jobs. I used to do it and I made it work. People in general, even the poor in my nation spend beyond their means rather than saving or paying for what is necessary.
There are few examples of socialized programs that produce FANTASTIC results. The last thing we need is a nanny state providing us with crap we can provide ourselves with...more efficiently. You want cheaper inusrance then bitch at the companies providing it, not the government.
Me, I'll pay out of pocket for my health insurance, than you, since it is far better than what a government could provide...and far cheaper in the long run.
Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness...
Edit: With that said, I am NOT defending the rest of Zach R.'s post.

I support much more funding, and better equality of resources for education. I am all for giving people hand ups, but few people actually need hand outs. I'm all for giving a helping hand, provided that people will grab onto the hand and at least try. Roughly 1/3rd of American's don't have basic health care. I don't care if Canada's system doesn't always work, everyone has the right to a doctor, isn't that what the Hippocratic Oath is all about? FDR knew a lot of his agencies wouldn't work, but he did the shotgun method: he tried 100 things so that if 50 failed, he still had 50 ones that were working. Let's experiment with nationalized health care. If it doesn't work the first time, let's change it and do it again. But let's do it. That's by me, by the way.
A lot of things are expensive, but still worth it. I pay taxes, and I have no problem paying a little more if it's saving lives and helping people. Most of the people who would be helped by this do try, but simply can't do it on their own. This goes specifically for the large population of people not poor enough for welfare but too poor for healthcare. Prisons are expensive, and keeping people in prison for life is expensive, but I don't support mass executions either. I know that you guys aren't saying that you mass executions for petty crimes, simply because that's cheap, but where do we draw the line between "too expensive, and so a tolerable evil" and "too horrible to let go on?"
The wars in Kosovo and Bosnia cost a lot of taxpayers money too, but they saved lives. Health care is very similar, it's trading tax dollars for lives. If it works best at the state or local level, so be it, but let's stand by the Hippocratic Oath. I'd want my family to have access to health care if we couldn't afford it, and I'd want you all to have access to health care if you couldn't afford it, so I can only hope for the same for everyone. Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

Just how much good does free cancer care do you when it takes so long to be diagnosed and scheduled for surgery, that it becomes terminal?
What Canada provides is equally bad treatment for all but the super rich
What the US provides is the best health care in the world at an affordable though steep price for all but the marginal.
In both countries, you get exactly what you pay for.
Allright you take the agriculture department...
Then we can divide the real serious departments between us men. ;)

If no one ever reads it again after Haiw did just now, well, at least I tried.

:D Course not. ;)
I'm not sure I understand that one Mr. President.....
oh... by the way... you need to give Nawlins a cushy appointment too. It's always good to have a lot of women on the team. We're the voice of reason you know..... :D

rofl Sounds good, farmgirl. And I meant that "Course not" to be directed at one of your above posts about you and CJ not being a thing. ;)
I still get a good laugh out of the woman running for President when she says "For more than 200 years, our nation has been run by men, and look at all the bad that's happened. I'd say it's time to let women have their turn, to see if we can do better."

I would never call you or any other woman that, farmgirl. I thought you knew me better. :D But seriously, I have the utmost respect for you. ;)
And all of the good men are married? Hmmm....USMA_SCUBA, I think I found you a date! I'm pretty sure SCUBA's not married, but I think he has a girlfriend. Still, he's not married. Or how about Argyll? Are you married, Argyll? You're a good guy, right? He may live across the ocean, but they say distance makes the heart grow fonder. ;)
I don't think you have to worry about finding great men, or that you need me setting you up with anyone. You don't need anyone to find you dates, you're plenty popular of your own accord here alone. We can only imagine what it's like in the real world. :D

I know you're just teasing Tane... if I thought anything else... you'd know it!
okay... all the good men are married.... (and yes Argyll is married too) or too young.
My social life could use a little help... just let me know what you come up with. My hometown isn't exactly a mecca for worthy men..... ;)

It'll be OK Haiw. In a few years your balls will drop and your voice will lose that squeak, then you'll be a playa. :D

Dude, Trigger talked about your balls. You gonna let him get away with that? You can't have all the guys thinking he can talk about your balls.
Well they are rather special (I would have said groundbreaking, but they haven't dropped THAT much), and who am I to forbid an obvious admirer to talk about them? It's his dream, and as long as I don't have to participate, what would I care? :P
