They are, they're dorks when they do it at age 16 or over, that kid is 13, it's fun for him... anyway, I'm happy for the father and I hope the kid gets well. Incredible story.

Didn't know I was a dork, playing airsoft at the age of 18 :cantbeli:

But as you say, heartwarming story, there is some warmth and compassion in this world after all *plays barry white*

Nice to see that there are genuine people out there!
Interesting to hear the "airsofters" are nerds ,dorks and geeks ,crew put down a passtime/hobby.Airsofters are the outcasts of their society sort of thing, odd when you "think out of the bubble" ,what happens, you have the guys on this site who if they migrated to SOCNET would be spit roasted and left to look stupid with their inane ramblings here!
In my day guys who were stuck on computers all day,and played video games, and hardly saw daylight were all the nerds ,geeks and weirdo's,and all the guys who used to go out and play at Soldiers were the ruff and tumble kids, always getting into mischief, coming home caked in mud and blood from making assault courses etc,but were happy kids!
Isn't it ironic how the roles have been reversed, and the attitudes too,I just wonder who the saddo's really are these day?!! ;) ......think outside the bubble...........it helps!!

Haiw

Well of course the geekiness of computer use is also defined by what you do in that time on your computer, for example there's a big difference between playing games and trying to program a SQL library for fun. Besides, playing war games outside was cool...when your age was still expressed in 1 digit. An 18-year-old dressing up in full army gear n stuff to go play soldiers is...not cool.

Argyll
12-31-2003, 11:39 AM
So your take on Cadets(13-18) then is they are also not cool?
Is there a difference between Cadets and airsofters then? Both run around playing wannabe's,see the way I see it unless you're serving or in a reserve unit, you're just going through the motions ,many decide that they do not wish a Military career, but a few do!

Haiw
12-31-2003, 11:53 AM
Well first of all, we ain't got no cadets here... (Well, we got OJKL, but they don't even get to shoot guns, they only get the '****ty' stuff) But cadets is different; cadets is about 'tasting' military life, mostly so that people can try so they can become soldiers later...Airsofting on the other hand is often exercised by people that are old enough to sign the dotted line, and yet prefer to keep dressing up and playing cops and robbers... Besides, how much does airsoft really have to do with being in the military?

Argyll
12-31-2003, 12:03 PM
Never tried it or paintball,so I can't pass judgement on it,but are you aware that Lt Col.Danny McKnight of BHD fame has taken part in some big airsoft meets Stateside......last person I'd call a geek!!

Haiw
12-31-2003, 12:06 PM
Ye well what I maybe shoulda said is just that a lot of the airsofters take it a little bit to the extreme...I mean, putting on your old clothes and having some fun with a cheap airsoft gun, sure.. But just compare; have you ever seen some 18-year olds playing with matches while dressed in a full fireman suit with helmet and oxygen because they 'admire' firemen...

Argyll

True...

Airsofters: Research equipment, weapons, uniforms to purchase and wear in a game.

Cadets: Research military history/science, issued uniforms/equipment, most are contracted to serve in the military for at least 4 years after graduation all the while learning basic soldier skills.

I agree with everything that Haiw said. Not all airsofters are dorks, I can understand people having fun with shooting paintball and stuff, I once did it myself when I was 10 years old. Grabbing a cheap gun and playing G.I.Joe for a moment isn't so bad, but if you look at a 19 year old dude, who spends all his money on plastic guns, uniforms, and all kinds of different airsoft equipment, then goes to the nearest forest with his "ranger" tab sewn on his shoulder and starts shooting kids 5 years younger then himself, it kind of makes you think. About Lt. Col. McKnight, he can open his own paintball shop and play Rambo all day for all I care, the man was in actual combat, so if you asked him to compare real bullets and plastic balls flying over your head, I'm sure he'd laugh. Trix are for kids, so is the airsoft.

Fair enough Argyll, let me correct myself then. Airsofters WHO WEAR MILITARY PATCHES are dorks. I admit I wasn't being fair to those who don't wear them, I saw some pictures of airsofters on this forum with Ranger tabs that pissed the living hell out of me. So I guess that's where the hatred came from p-)

For 10 days, his charisma filled the world and temporarily united all people from all nations. Not the use of any word will ever describe the immensity of his bravery. Known only as fruit_loops, the unknown soldier of the internet yet in real life he existed, he is our new icon of hope.

With these words, I regret to inform you that we lost our little fighter at 1117H (Pacific Time) today, the 5th of January 2004. His recovery was cut short by the worst seizure he ever had that lasted more than 40 minutes despite emergency medical interventions. He is now resting in peace and rest assured, he will struggle no more from pain.

Please accept our gratitude for all your time, your love and your prayers. xtremepaintballcanada.com will always be proud to have been selected by an unknown force to beam to the world the last 10-days of the life of our little fighter or our little man or our wee man as we all have been endeared to the existence of such terms.

Let’s rally the world again one more time and give the family words of encouragement and support. Please go back to where you chanced on the story of our little fighter and post a statement of gratitude not only from us but make it from the world.

If he touched your lives, please submit your post-scripts. In lieu of cards, flowers, gifts or donations to the family, please redirect them to a cancer research organization of your choice.

Do remember the countless fruit_loops we have around the world. Respect their pain and sufferings, please.

To the various men and women and institutions who fought fruit_loops’ battle alongside with him, a thank you is all we can afford. Let’s keep God in our hearts.

[In case you experience connection difficulties, please hold on a bit and retry again after a minute or so. Our servers are definitely overloaded and being choked with tremendous simultaneous connections. This will stabilize as we ease focus on his threads. Thank you for your understanding.
