ENEMIES of Equatorial Guinea's president should be afraid - he is said to eat their ********s.

Teodoro Obiang has ruled the west African nation with an iron fist for 25 years.

He even executed his uncle - the previous dictator - to claim power.

His government has been accused of human rights abuses and of ruthlessly suppressing political opposition.

In the last election, he claimed to have won almost 100 per cent of the vote.

State radio last month declared that he was to be regarded as the country's 'God'.

The broadcast said: 'He can decide to kill without anyone calling him to account and without going to Hell.' He is even rumoured to be a cannibal.

So it should come as no surprise that there have been many attempts to overthrow him.

But the prime motive for a recent string of failed coups isn't revenge. It's oil.

Huge oil and gas reserves were discovered offshore in 1996, creating one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

Massive investment flowed into a nation of just 500,000 people. But little wealth filtered down to the poor.

The US Senate are probing American bank accounts holding millions of dollars for the dictator's family.


But the president's crimes may be even worse than that. Severo Moto Nsa, the rival leader of a government-in-exile in Spain and the man who was to take power in the alleged latest coup plot, has described President Obiang as a cannibal who "eats his political rivals".
Mr Moto claims that the president was told by local soothsayers to kill the people close to him to keep his grip on power. Since then he has allegedly murdered and eaten people he views as a threat.

"He has devoured a police commissioner," Mr Moto told a Spanish radio station in March. "I say 'devoured', as this commissioner was buried without his ********s and brain. We are in the hands of a cannibal."

And Mr Moto sees himself as a prime target: "Obiang wants me to go back to Guinea ... [so he can] eat my ********s."

Pygmy activists from Congo have demanded the United Nations set up a tribunal to try government and rebel fighters accused of slaughtering and eating Pygmies who are caught in the country's civil war.

Army, rebel and tribal fighters - some believing the Pygmies are less than human or that eating the flesh would give them magic power - have been pursuing the Pygmies in the dense jungles, killing them and eating their flesh, the activists said at a news conference yesterday.

There have been reports of markets for Pygmy flesh, the representatives alleged.

"In living memory, we have seen cruelty, massacres, genocide, but we have never seen human beings hunted and eaten literally as though they were game animals, as has recently happened," said Sinafasi Makelo, a representative of the Mbuti Pygmies in Congo.

"Pygmies are being pursued in the forests ... people have been eaten," said Makelo, a delegate to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, which is meeting at UN headquarters.

"This is nothing more, nothing less than a crime against humanity," he declared. "This is a certain kind of genocide."

Njuma Ekundanayo, an expert member of the Permanent Forum, said attacks against the Pygmies "are not only coming from the army but also from other groups".

"We don't understand why the military practises cannibalism against the Pygmies," she said.

The fighters also rape and ******ly assault Pygmy women, and ******ly transmitted diseases are spreading in Pygmy communities, the activists said.

About 600,000 Pygmies are believed to live in Congo, which is in the midst of a five-year-old civil war fuelled by deep-seated ethnic and tribal hatreds. Original inhabitants of Congo, the Pygmies continue to live deep in the forests, eking out an existence by hunting and gathering food from small, nomadic base camps.

Earlier this year, human rights activists and UN investigators confirmed that rebels cooked and ate at least a dozen Pygmies and an undetermined number of people from other tribes during fighting with rival insurgents. There have been no reports of Congolese Army soldiers engaging in similar activity.

Most of the reported acts of cannibalism took place between November and December when the Congolese Liberation Movement launched a successful offensive to retake the town of Mambasa.

The Congolese Liberation Movement had previously lost the town to a rival rebel group.

Jean-Pierre Bemba, the group's leader, has said he was "shocked" by reports that his troops ate people.

Addressing the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues yesterday, Makelo told the body to ask the Security Council, the UN Committee on Human Rights and other bodies to recognise acts of cannibalism as a crime against humanity and acts of genocide.

He also asked the United Nations to set up an international tribunal to try those accused of such crimes.

Ekundanayo, the Permanent Forum member, said no figures on the number of such assaults were available.

Accidental killing is not murder. It is regrettable, bad, unpleasant, horrible - but the intention behind the act does matter. Imagine for example if the US had the same mindset as some of these tribes who would wipe each other out to the last man without hesitation. We have the means to do exactly that, and could have vaporized Iraq with no friendly losses. But we have not.

I'm not saying that the West has never done anything immoral or outrageous - but it's prettly clear to me that we exercise a great deal of restraint, and never unleash the full capability of what our machinery can do. We should get credit for that. I don't think any of us want to see a true "total" war again.

Sure, give credit where credit is due. The West is wearing spotless white robes of moral superiority, despite perhaps a few little insignificant (to us anyway) episodes like Spanish, Portugese, French, Dutch and British colonialism which reulted in millions dead, entire cultures extinguished, entire nationes uprooted and enslaved. Let's not forget countless colonial wars to protect property and lives of the civilized masters or "teach lessons" to the "savages" (the Brits for example had no moral qualms about using poison gas in the Middle East). Anything is justified as long as it's in the nation's interest, so it's ok to nuke Japs, kill hundreds of thousands in Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Congo, South America, Iraq, millions in Vietnam. It is also ok to come up with a handy concept of "preemptive wars" half a world away, any good old agression can be justified as "necessary to counter an imminent threat".

There's also this little matter of the consumption levels inequality between the "golden billion" and the rest of the world, the truth is that to preserve our high standard of living and consumption "they" must stay at their current lows standard, there's just not enough stuff on the planet, so the status quo is preserved through well-coordinated political, economical and military means.

So yeah, we don't smash other human beings' heads with stones to procure their delicious brain, but we do much worse things on a much grander scale and in a much more orginized fashion. The african savages act individually or in small tribal groups, we act as a part of a global civilization that assigned itself the authority of the judge, jury and the executioner.

All that the West has done and is doing does not of course exhonerate the brutality of the "developing" nations but we are hardly in the position to pass an enlightened moral judgement and carry out the sentence.

Old Testament whose rules were de facto abolished by the new alliance of the New Testament (cf, women stoning which was a Jewish custom, before being a muslim one and abolished by JC during the "who is not guilty can throw the first stone" episod).

But the problem here is not religious, it's a political problem: why would Europe have to accept on its soil people who bring nothing except problems, in this case very ugly problems?

When I look at the situation of the whites in South Africa or Zimbabwe, I'm not in a hurry to live in an "africanized" Europa.
