I like the size. Something like this would probably be usefull in the Nordic countries as well, while the Humvee is too wide.

Im still waiting for a country to make Toyota 4x4's as there truck. You could probably hold alot more people in a 80's 4 Runner then you can in most of these vehicles plus they are easy to maintan.

Not sure though if they are rugged enough, they are made for the civilian market after all. And up here north they seem to be too "light" even for being light trucks.

Here is a picture from one wonderfull game :D The one one the left, "Masi" is the standard light truck used in Finland. Can carry 33 persons (safely) and also be used as a platform for anti-aircraft weapons such as the Zu-23-2. The one on the right is Rasi, the standard heavy truck. Masi is really more a medium truck, but I guess they don´t find any use for lighter trucks than those in FDF.

Ya you call those dudes in the back of the Toyota's pussies and lets see how far your "humanshield" nickname goes with em.
Toyotas are dependable as hell, they can take quite the harsh amount of abuse. Maybe one day there will be an offical Toyota that will be used for military purpose's....I hope to see that day woot

I wouldn't mind a Landcruiser based varient but Hiluxs just aren't tough enough through the drive train.
Lower the low range gearing in the cruiser, keep the turbo diesel (I know the Australian Army would just love to stick a 3 litre 4 cyl diesel so they could get better fuel efficiency and make the top speed between 110kmh and 115 kmh), throw in some diff locks, make the approach and departure angles better and the Cruiser would be looking good.

Not sure though if they are rugged enough, they are made for the civilian market after all. And up here north they seem to be too "light" even for being light trucks.

Well they can survive being pushed out to sea, then found full of silt and started up again with a few basic tools and a mechanic. They can survive driving through a number of sheds, then having a caravan dropped on them. They can also (for the most part) survive fire... And they can survive a drop from the top of an old '60s high-rise flat complex which is being detonated/collapsed.

The contest for spanish Army will be this year, and the competitors are UROVESA with the Uro vehicle, SANTANA MOTOR with the Aníbal and LAND ROVER with the Defender. The price of the contract is about 150 million euros, and is supposed to replace a fleet of 8.000 light 4x4 in the next 10 years.
This contest is for LIGHT 4x4, so this new vehicles don´t compete with such as Hummies or Rebecos, since this are biggers cars, in fact, spanish army is well equiped with new vehicles in this segment.

What is the date of this photo, mustamato? Those appear to be Stinger MANPADs (to me). I am aware the Mujahads had Stingers from the CIA during the Russian war, but are there confirmations that the Taliban had aquired them. Also the batteries would have to be replaced over the 10 years it took the Taliban to win control of Afghanistan. Can anybody corroberate?

As for Toyotas, weren't they used effectively by Chad with anti-tank weapons during the Lybian invasion, charging Tanks from opposite directions in the 1987 battle for the control of the Aozou (http://www.american.edu/projects/mandala/TED/ice/AOZOU.HTM) oasis?

Oh I think that those are talibans all right. One word: Pakistan. This is quite interesting. All knows that CIA distributed Stingers to mujahediins in Afghanistan, but they did it thru Pakistan. It is quite obvious that they copied the technology used in the Stinger, their own Anza MkII seems to be a little of a mixture between soviet SA-7´s and Stinger if I have understood it correctly. After the Soviets left the CIA tried to gather up all the Stingers but (obviously) failed. Where did Pakistan get the batteries (that they later must have supplied to the talibans)? Did the CIA make a fresh supply or were these obtained from the Chinese? China, as some reports published some years ago say, bought the Stinger technology from the CIA and are now producing replicas of their own. One thing is for sure, there are new batteries and spareparts coming in from somewhere. In the Kargil War (about Kashmir) as late as 1999 a Indian MiG-27 was shot down by a Stinger.

Below of an another example of chinese/pakistani assistance?

Question for the Spaniards: the Tercio de Armada, do they use Hummers or Rebeco? I have seen a picture of them during the Allied response exercise held in Turkey last November and I could not see whether it was a TOW Humvee or a TOW Rebeco they were using.

Gracias.

I´d like to answer that, but I don´t know. But I suppose yes because TEAR has their own group of SForces, and probably they go to Jaca for some type of training, even it´s a mountain field.
You can ask it here, in spanish and english too, and sure you´ll have a quick answer:

i find it funny how most military equpiment eventually evolves in to something that looks alot like something the americans have already put in to service and battle tested to quality IE: that thing lookin like a hummer.. i believe the chinese are puttin soemthign together that looks like a hummer... then the russians tank i dont remember the name of it looks exactly like a abrams except for the few russian trade mark features.

Loco is right the Spanish marines SF goes to Jaca to EMMOE but only to high mountain training even they don't need it really, because in case of high mountain training the troops involved would be Mountain Rangers and Army SF, and not marines SF.
