I liked this one. RCLīs are considered obsolete in many armies, but a 106 mm with modern ammunition would still probably be quite lethal. With modern ammunition it can probably pierce some 600 mm after ERA. (I assume that since the finnish 95 mm RCL with its new ammunition can pierce 500+ mm after ERA). Of course not enough against a Abrams or something like that, but could be enough against the russian T-series of MBTīs as used by North Korea, China and so forth.

They are, I see (and I expect many others) Type 90s, SiG P220s, F-15J/DJs, Type 89s (MICV and IW), Blackhawks, F-2s et cetera modern. Basicaly it's their constitution (and public) that just disallows the use of the Nihon Rikujyo Jieitai (JGSDF), Nihon Kaijyo Jieitai (JMSDF) and Nihon Koku Jieitai (JASDF) in 'offensive' means. See here (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/japan/intro.htm) for more infomation.

Well I think I'm right in saying the M1 was the weapon of choice when the JSDF was formed, so there's nothing really 'interesting'.

It didn't destroy them, it destroyed 'old and evil' Japan, not the new, 'fresh', peaceful post-1945 Japan...

are you trying to make a joke? 'coz yesiree bob they do indeed need to accelerate their modernization. the majority of their ordnance is seriously outdated. guys ricing around in jeeps with a recoiless rifle! :cantbeli:
agaisnst armor almost any atgm offers better range and penetration, agaist soft targets a 40mm mk19 will get you there easier. you could carry both for about the same weight as that cannon.
i know they've got the type90 (which has got to be the most unproven modern mbt out there), but the majority of their armor looks like '70's vintage. i could go on.
to get to the point, as another poster has already pointed out, japan's military is limited in scope and budget by it's post war constituion. there is a movement attempting to.... oh nevermind. here's a link:

Iīve read they nippon navy is really modern and quite capable, only they donīt have nuke weapons or carriers.
I forgot to add in the recent N.Korea crisis, Japan made it clear to Kim Il Sung that could do a preventive strike if they realize NKorea missiles were pointed in any moment towards Japan. Although USA is a strong guarantee in the zone, it seems as Japanse now wonīt wait for being defended by others.

Actually did any of you guys know that next to the U.S Japan spends the second most amount of money per year on its military. Yes more money than any other nation in the world minus the U.S. I 2004 Japan spent somewhere in the range of $50 billion annually with the UK, and Russia and China all closely knitted in the next group.

here is a link to the 2004 annual military spending of selected countries however some of the info is wrong but all sources say the same **** that i checked out on the net. Russia and China's budgets have gone down since 2001 and the figures shown on the chart are from 2001 thus allowing Japan to take second place in military spending.
