A U.S. U-2 spy plane has crashed in southwest Asia, but the military has not disclosed the location of the crash or any of the circumstances.

The U.S. Air Force, in a short written statement, said the cause of the crash and the fate of the U-2 pilot was not known.

The U-2, a single-seat jet able to fly at high altitudes on surveillance missions, has been flown by the U.S. Air Force for over 50 years.

Officials said the plane went down Tuesday evening.

"Southwest Asia" includes Iran, amongst other places that US military aircraft are not exactly welcome.

Hopefully it was just an accident and the pilot's safe.

The news byte is quite scarily non-specific :|

Probably France, or maybe Papua New Guinea.

On topic, this is interesting. I do hope another 1960 doesn't come out of this.

It's the same. Basically Israel/Lebanon to the Iranian/Afghan border.

I would have included Iran in SW asia. It's cultural affinities are not arab as with nearly all of the rest of the ME, though I suppose it's kind of a moot point.

Pilot dies after U-2 Dragon Lady crashes in Southwest Asia

6/22/2005 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- The pilot of an Air Force U-2 Dragon Lady died when his plane crashed at a forward-deployed location here in the early hours of June 22.

The pilot completed flying a mission supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and was returning to base when the crash occurred. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. He was assigned to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing.

The cause of the crash is not known.

“The Airmen of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing mourn the loss of a true American hero in the service of his country,” said Col. Darryl Burke, 380th AEW commander.

Colonel Burke appointed an interim investigation board, and a full investigation board will convene to continue the investigation.

The site of the crash has been secured to ensure the safety of local citizens and the integrity of the site for investigation team members.

I work for Dow Jones but not the Newswires section but they're in the other room in Hong Kong, but I'm involved with the asian wall street journal, I should have further look in this.

Interesting that it was landing on a UAE base when the detachment operates from Cyprus.

Interesting that it was landing on a UAE base when the detachment operates from Cyprus.

Didn't know that.......

100% SPECULATION:

"was returning to base(in UAE) when the crash occurred"

from a mission supporting efforts in Afghanistan

Afghanistan being landlocked with Iran between it and UAE(assuming Pakistani airspace wasn't used)

VERY thin on detail

possibility of it being engaged by Iran???

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line!

Or maybe just thin on detail to avoid upsetting folks hosting us infidels in the general vicinity.

Interesting theory. I would be inclined to look at it closely. And I will, tommorow.

It later emerged that a U-2 spy plane involved in the operation crashed while returning to its base in the United Arab Emirates, killing the pilot. A Pentagon official said there was no indication of hostile fire.

No, of course the U-2 doesn't exist. Neither does the TR-1. It's all a figment of your imagination.
